I don’t even have a 4th gen, and I even I joined in on the righteous indignation :D.

It was my first ever post outside the “safe-spaces” of our midwest threads. I don’t know how I should feel about that. I’m surprised I haven’t been beaten to a pulp yet, or run out of town. I heard TW can be a scary place:laugh:

Yes but you'll do much better with a wire-feed welder that runs on 240v. Wire feed not a stick welder. I'll defer to Pat and Rich as experts but there is such a thing as the right tool for the job in this case. I know that because I bought a newer inverter-style welder from Eastwood to try and cheat like this and while it is still a good tool I don't want to spend any appreciable time doing bigger pieces because the duty cycle (aka how long you can weld continuously without stopping to let it cool down) is atrociously short for metal of any decent thickness. Like anything over 1/8" you can weld a few inches and then stop for several minutes. Zero fun. Doing a full bumper would be agonizing.

This is basically equivalent to the class/size of welder I have except Miller so better (generally speaking). Not enough.

If you want long details the PrimeWeld page has some good info. But essentially a welder is keeping the voltage in the 16-30V range and modulating the amperage based on how fast your wire feed speed is set. Faster speed, amps goes up, heat goes up. It's possible to hit 160A this way but probably not for a long time.

    Thanks for the info.

Big projects are a ways down the road.
For now, I think, I take what I have and start laying down some lines.
Get some practice and try welding some small crap around the house.

I'm sure I can find something. :drevil:

So... if you want to weld 3/16-1/4 and be able to run for the most part continuous you need to look at a Miller 211, or equivalent at a minimum, or $2000 ish. My two cents. You cannot achieve what you want/need with anything 110V. I am looking in the 4-5k range for the welder I want... Crunchy brakes, front locker, SAS and the endless freekin mods are in the way.

    $$$$$. That's what I was afraid of.
I'm not cheap just thrifty. lol

Unless I can put my skills of finding good/used stuff for sale, to work.
I'm better off just sticking to my 70amp arts and crafts and paying your merry band of minions to do a bumper.

Otherwise, I'm not saving anything adding a 2k welder to the mix. Might as well spend the 1500 on a complete bumper at that point.

Edit: not to mention I'd have to sweet talk @Thatbassguy in to hooking up some 220V in the garage.

14b if you want cheap and strong. FZJ80 FF if you can find one reasonably priced and/or want to keep it Toyota. Ford 9” if you want light, strong, and aren’t afraid to spend a little money.

Just buy one and then once you are done sell it to @Thatbassguy so he can build his bumper. Then he can sell it to the next guy.

    Then everyone wins

Or you can build them for everyone if that’s more your style.

    There's an idea!

What about snagging one off amz, doing mine and James' bumper.
Then send it back within the return period for a refund and say it doesn't work. :D
