The gx2 is what I have. Wanted a 6 footer but 6'6" was the shortest I could find, in a Medium 2pc, that wasn't ultralight...My ultralight is 5'.

I get into some shit and wade, too.
Not much shoreline or casting room so I like the shorter rods.

I always forget that they make different kinds of Ugly Stiks. I always think of the heavy fiberglass ones. I'll have to check out the GX2 the next time I'm looking for a rod.

    I like it....
I used a 6' rod for many many years.
Going to a 6'6" really changed my casting accuracy just by increasing the length 6"
Took a little to get it back.

Most of my casting rods are 6'6" or 7'. But, I'm usually looking more for distance than accurately. I can cast into a tree from a pretty good distance!

Thats why I bought like 30 flies last night. I am out of practice but I remember the cost at the start is pretty high...

    Sometimes.

Pink 1/8 oz jigheads and 3" white or peppered PowerGrubs are cheap.
Whatever is hungry in the river at that time, will bite on those.
Creeks are trout and there's only a couple things you need for those.

Lakes are different and I haven't fished them as much as the other 2.

The nice thing about creeks and streams is you can walk over and get it........a lot of times but not all.

    Definitely! Well.. sometimes.

This happens sometimes. I'm pretty good at popping things out of trees. But, sometimes you're just out of luck. Mangroves are especially difficult in this regard.

So I really got into ice fishing again over the last couple of years and thought it was time to step up my open water fishing too and replace equipment I've had for 25 years.

I just bought myself a new spinning reel setup kinda for panfish, maybe some trout or bass. It was my father's day gift to myself, approved by the wife. She's getting a fancy new Shun Damascus steel chef knife that she doesn't know about this weekend for mother's day. (I'm also secretly excited to use that!)

I got good advice from @Thatbassguy that lighter is better. Went with an ACC Crappie Stix 7.5' rod and an Abu Garcia Revo SX reel.

    PXL_20250501_042251197.jpg

I got out for an hour Wednesday afternoon to a little stocked pond with my neighbor and got to try it out. So much nicer than anything I've had before. I didn't catch anything, but my neighbor got a couple trout while I was messing around with my new setup. Looking forward to hauling in slabs this summer!

I'd think as long as you guys have been fishing, tree bass would be a thing long in the past. Dad was pretty adamant about not getting lures in trees.
