I wish I was able to get outside of cell coverage… The old days did have some advantages after all.

For the most part, the only people making good money in solar are the ones selling the systems. They have you locked into the grid so if the power goes out, you’re down. That’s crazy. If I ever did go solar, the only way I’d consider it is diy, with the ability to be off-grid and only if I had room to put it somewhere other than on my roof. I’ve heard way too many horror stories.
If I lived in AZ, it would be a no brainer. Not here.

This was part of the initial discussion. I don't remember the numbers now. It is at least ten years out. Thing for me is that the life expectancy of the array is now further out than the loan so it will pay for itself and return some savings. For us it isn't about sticking it to the MAN (although I like that they have to pay us something every year) but trying to do the right thing (at the moment with known technology) for the environment and future.

We still get 3-5 hours of sun at my latitude so I can still get some decent ROI…I would also prefer a battery option so I’m not down if the grid goes down. I’m partially interested in it financially, and also….solar is basically free energy, figure I might as well take advantage of it. Even if I’m not making back a ton of money, I’m environmentally motivated to use it if I can.

My thought was to put them on my garage roof since it’s a lot easier to access/work on if there are any issues.

I thought there was the option to do either or.(?)
Connected to the grid or completely offline.

From what some people around here have said, some roofers won't touch a roof that has panels on it.

Pump and pipe. Things started coming undone in January, so this is much nicer for the well guys.

Oddly, I've never really done a residential job with solar. I helped my brother on one recently, and it seemed like the solar guys handled everything regarding the solar panels.

I think it's a good idea, though, if you have the space. And, if you're planning on staying where you are long enough to make your money back on it.

I'd actually like to learn more about photovoltaic systems, as they seem to be getting more popular.

I used to do installs with solar, both resi and commercial. Was paying $40/hr back in 2012.

Super simple. Backbreaking. But with a decent crew, really not a bad gig at all.

Somewhere on the internet there's a picture of a weird house with super steep roofs that we were doing and my pathfinder is actually acting as the anchor for our belay lines.

I look at it pretty regularly. I’ll do it someday and probably DIY. it’s not super difficult.

yeah I also wouldn’t want to end up locked into an ecosystem but a lot of the components are fairly standard so it’s not as big of worry as it is with some things.

Yeah, it's getting closer, but the value proposition just isn't quite there yet. It's kinda sorta like back when the .gov decided that incandescent lights were bad and pretty much outlawed them. The only alternative at the time were CFLs that were pretty crappy. Then some genius (he got a Nobel prize for it) came up with LED lights that were not terribly expensive, but last virtually forever and use a tiny fraction of the power. That value proposition made it an obvious choice
