I've never measured, either, as others have said. I think it's considered acceptable to lose a little bit between changes, but I'm not sure how much would be indicative of a problem.

This is from my manual, FWIW. There's probably something similar in the Taco manual...

    Screenshot_20250823_070907_Drive.jpg

Jeez! That seems a little excessive!

Basically says, if you drive your 4 runner, it will consume oil.

I had a bit of a situation yesterday. I was out goofing around on the beach at the Chippewa River and got stuck.

I had actually written up a whole paragraph trying to explain what happened, and then I decided it was better if I didn't try to explain the stupidity that led to this.

My brother came over with his ATV and asked if I thought his winch could help. I didn't have any other options, so we hooked up. At first, I didn't seem to be making any progress. I ended up using mall control, and I was damn impressed! Got it on solid ground, and then my brother used the winch, still attached, to pull himself out of the hole he dug himself into trying to tug the 4Runner's fat ass out. I aired the tires down, headed for higher ground, and didn't let off the gas until I was back on the easement road.

The driver's side was actually lower than the passenger side. Water was on, but not over, the door sill. The carpet got a little wet, so I'll be airing that out today.

I wonder if the Yokohamas would have done better, or if it was just a result of not airing down. It was definitely an idiot moment. Thank God my brother was there with his Polaris, otherwise it could have been a serious problem.

    Yeah.

I'm curious what amount would be considered normal.

I'll admit that, once I started driving non POS vehicles, I've rarely, if ever, checked the oil between changes. I might start checking it more regularly, especially with the amount of abuse the 4Runner sees.

That guy that brought the Hyundai over,...the one that was about 2qts low on a 4cyl...His engine was making a clickity-clackity as it rolled in the driveway...
He claims it's been running great, since but I wouldn't doubt he initiated some premature wear on a very pricey fix.

    I'm not the engine guy.
My question with his Hyundai was.
It's not leaking anywhere. Assuming all seals and gaskets are good...Where did 2 qts go.?
    Burned off somewhere.

Even going beyond the recommended oil change, 2 qts doesn't seem normal in his case.

    Blow by? Bad piston rings?

    How many miles/months between changes?

    What kind of driving?

Old Hondas will burn oil like a MF. But, they'll keep running.

When I smashed my door a week or so ago, it was because I didn't air down. 40psi in 4L is stupid. But, stupid is as stupid does. You weren't stuck, just exercising you options... I carry two 40 foot straps for those kind of problems.

1 of 2 things led you to do this.

1-You were testing your recovery skills

2- You wanted to create a photo opportunity for next year's calendar.

On my 8800 mile drive to Alaska, ALF did not burn any oil at all. I was really surprised by that. The oil gets checked every time I get gas. I learned that from watching the gas attendants at the full service stations, back in the day.

From my experience with mixed driving, a modern Toyota burning about half a quart between oil changes is pretty normal and safe.

That being said, definitely make sure you're topped off before any exciting excursions or long-range adventures.

And stay away from topping your oil off with things like Pennzoil which have way too much paraffin wax in them. Stick with the good stuff like mobile one or amsoil. There are many others that work just fine.

Anecdote take it with a grain of salt. I did one oil change on my daily with Walmart supertech oil and that engine has never been the same since. You'll never see me buying that crap again.

As far as getting a 4Runner stuck, you have ATRAC. You have mall control. Both of them are phenomenal systems that could pretty much get it out of anything on this planet.

Of course, airing down does help and that's a great photo and I'm glad you got out of it with minimal water damage. Take it from a guy who's had his truck underwater twice.. :anonymous:

Couldn't find any of me stuck. Guess you'll have to check your archives. But I found this. We know this guy... A trend perhaps?

I removed the mud flaps. I get a little rubbing, nothing serious.
