So after mining the materials used, and producing Catalytic Converters do we even break even or end up better with the Emissions saved from the vehicles they're installed on?

Kind of like wind power, they never actually pay for themselves for energy produced vs used to manufacturer.

??? not to dive too much off topic, but do you have any sort of citation for that claim?

Here is a 2014 study that shows that 2 MW turbines paid for themselves in 5-6 months

Here is a 2010 meta-analysis that indicates that the average wind turbine generates approximately 20 times its initial energy deficit

I'm all in on making sure that we're not erroneously creating "energy savings" [looking at you, tesla], but wind power isn't where I'd start my search. [ahem, 'clean' coal]

I have no hard data to back up my statement. That's just what I hear from people in that industry. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out!

Edit - Here's an article more in line with what I've heard.

Anyways, we return you to your regularly scheduled shenanigans.

Sounds like something you just heard on facebook tbh

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I'm no expert in the field. I'm just not a big fan of spreading intentional misinformation.

I took a look at that article, it's interesting. It uses an average price [¢/kWh] that is notably less than it is now [7.2 ¢/kWh vs 11.55 ¢/kWh], as well as making the argument that the windmill is not profitable until after it's lifespan is up, which is way more complicated of an argument than I am willing to take on -- between subsidies and tech advances, that's more math than I'm willing to do without wolfram-alpha.

Conversely, that same domain shows that the carbon payback for wind turbines is dropping significantly, although they're mostly concerned with placement on peatland in the UK. Overall, it looks like it's still likely that the carbon payback is well within their generally expected lifespan, and is only getting better.

anyway, we return to truck stuff. Anyone know if I can get MN to approve my license plate of, "TACUSSY"?

How are you liking the seat covers so far? I've been looking at seat covers and these seem like a decent set for the price.

I know you weren't asking me but I had them on my Tundra and they fit great, looked great, and felt great. My only complaint is that they were too warm (but I'm a sweaty teddy so for many people I'm sure they're fine.)

Only had them on for a day but so far they seem fine. Never had seat covers before in my life, but I have sat on vehicles with cheap ones from local parts stores and they are way better quality than that. Not as perfect as I could imagine Wet Okole or Clazzios are but for less than half price I’d think they are hard to beat.

Seems like different versions of the same thing.

It's a nice idea. I've thought about a portable kitchen setup. I'll surely steal some ideas from these.
