That was rough to read my friend. I have two little ones myself and i would have a hell of a time holding it together if something were to happen to one of them. Very happy to hear he's at home and doing better!

Prayers are with you and your family. That was difficult to read but I am relieved he is doing better and home with you. I cannot imagine going through something like that with my 3yo son. My son is my sidekick and my life, that little shrimp would erase any bad days I would have at work.

Man, this really kicked me in the gut when I read this. I'm so sorry to hear about your son! I hope and pray that he will recover quickly with no lasting problems and that you don't beat yourself up at all. You've been great at giving me info. about my sons recent diagnosis with type 1 diabetes and I really hate to hear about you having to go through something like this. If you need to vent or just get anything off your chest, feel free to PM me or even call............I'm a good listener. Prayers sent for your son and your family.

Prayers sent from a fellow diabetic. I know from personal experience how hard it is ton deal with that at a young age. Try looking into an insulin pump if you haven't already. Minimed makes a great one. It requires less shots and it has the technology to even systematicaly check his bloodsugar levels. I know it must be tough seeing your child like this but when he gets better, look into the pump. It makes having diabetes SO much easier.

that must have been unbelievably hard on everyone. im glad your all through it. you guys need to meet with the endocrinologist and come up with some "sick day plans" if you already havent discussed it. being sick puts a stress on the body, more with diabetes, couple that with decreased food and fluid intake due to feeling like shit, so you skip insulin doses so the sugar wont go low, little do you know the body is spiking sugars because of stress, up down up down.......then suddenly its DKA and the sugar is 800+ and well..... come up with some sick day plans. its very importanat. good luck

thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers! It means a lot to us!!

He was diagnosed just before his 3rd birthday in 2008. We've had him on a Medtronic Paradigm pump for about 8 months now. We think it was a combo of a stomach bug that hit him and his infusion set not setting properly. We had changed out his set on Sunday night and through out monday his BS levels were higher than normal and I kept making corrections and his levels were pretty consistent. Tuesday when I left for work he was a little out of it and my wife stayed home with him. When she tested him he was higher than the day before and wasn't peeing that is when she took him in. Our only guess is the combination of the infusion set issue and the bug he had caused the DKA to snowball. He is well managed and his A1C's are around the 7 mark. This is our first experience with DKA so we really didn't pick up on the signs or even stop to think about the pump. Well, lesson learned and as long as we are managing his diabetes we wont allow the DKA to happen again!

His levels are still higher than normal due to an ear infection but I'm checking him hourly and correcting him to keep his levels below 200. He still doesn't have much of an appetite but he's eating small amounts and drinking water and the zero calorie zero carb powerade

He's almost 6 and looks like he's had the living shit kicked out of him
