Interested in seeing a home made bed rack...Would love one on my truck.

 

Gonna be pretty simple. The 3 bows are bent to match the cab contour and height. There will be 3 bars length wise of the bed on top. The bows will be leaned forward to match the angle of the cab. Pretty much going to make it be as close to the dimensions of a shell as possible. Plan on making a canvas cover for it in the future.

you're going to leave the plastic caps on?

 

Yes I am. There will be tube work that connects the rails to the bed mounting bolts in the floor of the bed. I am going to put some self adhesive foam rubber on the bottom of the rails to keep the steel rails from eating away at the plastic caps from flex. The rack will appear to rest on the rails but the load will be supported off the corners where it ties to the bed bolts.

The rails will be trimmed at the bottom so that most of the cleat rail will be usable but these will attach to the cleat rail in 3 places on each side.

Kudos to you for teaching him

 

My son and his friends spend about 3/4 of their free time in my garage. Every one of them has something on their vehicle that we have built together. Pretty sure once I get where I can retire that I'll start teaching high school vocational classes.

 

Some daylight pictures so y'all can see better how it lays with the cab and such. Before y'all ask the tube overhang at the rear of the bed is 100% intentional and will be trimmed and plated.

 

Had some side work show up today so I only got about 2 hours of time for my stuff today. But I did get the bed rack into a usable state. Just need to sandblast prime and paint. The bed floor mounts may get built tomorrow or my next set of days off. Sorry just took one crappy picture of the rack tonight but y'all get the idea.

 

i think it'll look pretty cool if you put some side pieces that match the prinsu. I'm sure your friend with the waterjet could make some slotted flat bar. maybe put a piece halfway up on the side for accessories.

 

Already in the works that has been the plan sense the beginning. That is why I built the rack cab height. I will be ordering the cross bars from Prinsu so that I can get a exact fit on the width.

 

lol. i like the way you think. after this one can you come up with a design that'll work with my revolver tonneau cover? and bolt together? and cost less than $100 to ship to hawaii?

That's a tall order there bud...

Shipping on anything over 48" long is high even on the mainland.

Well it has been a good 14 days off but all good things must come to an end.... back to my paying job tomorrow morning at 04:00.
Got the bed rack in to a usable state, primed, painted and installed. My son giving the old man a hand bolting it down. Also got the mesh grille done. Was going to paint the letters white but the white paint I had wouldn't flash fast enough so that I could mask them off. So I said hell with it stripped the white off and painted it all black. Then I remembered I had touch up paint. Used it and painted the letters quicksand. The letters are fresh off the CNC table if y'all were wondering and they are welded to the mesh grille from the back side.
