I’ve been driving manual transmissions for 20 years, but every once in awhile even I will stall my truck.

I’ve maybe stalled my 2018 OR about four times, just pulling out of a parking spot. Normal stuff, just not paying attention or distracted.

My Tacoma will not just start again after stalling. It just cranks and cranks and doesn’t fire. Shows battery warning in red in the info screen. I have to remove the key and reinsert it and it starts again.

I asked Toyota at one of my services. No one knew for sure but some of the mechanics thought it was a safety feature. Although seems very unsafe to me. If this happened pulling into an intersection or a right on red it would be very dangerous to not start up again right away.

Anybody ever heard of this? I know most Tacoma’s are Auto so might be difficult to get a large enough sample size of it occurring with anyone else.

I never had this happen on a second or third gen manual Tacoma. Unfortunately I won't be of any help

Be a little more aggressive and quit stalling it . Cars from sixties each had minds of their own . If you drove your friends car he would say okay now this is how you start it and this is how to treat the clutch and the gas pulling out .

Sure, but that aside, it’s an odd behavior for the truck.

I do know how to drive. Last truck was a ranger I had for like 10 years and literally stalled it once. I remember the single time I did.

Makes me wonder if you're actually stalling it or if something else is happening.

They do. Maybe pushing that and restarting would solve it.

Move your seat up another notch so you depress the clutch more.

Have you checked your battery and fuses? (Dumb suggestion but stranger things have happened) try push starting it if you haven't

I've had the same thing happen to me shortly after starting the truck and trying to drive over a snow bank.
Going out on a limb, but I think with the draw of starting it and killing it multiple times on an already weak battery it causes the issue. I gave it a minute or two and tried again and it worked.

When it starts back up is there a lot of smoke like an over rich condition ? Trying to determine if it's fuel starvation or electrical/ignition in nature.

    Cps ?
That would do it. I'd swap that out.

You flooded it. Common problem when it stalls. Just keep cranking and try flooring the throttle until it starts. It will eventually sputter back to life. It's happened to me a few times.

I had it happen once in 2 years and 80k miles. After a few tries I got it to go again.

When I had it happen I stalled it shortly after starting up twice in a row.

    Never had an issue since.

Give it more revs so it wont stall.

If the engine is cold, then likely flooded it. Crank it with the gas pedal fully depressed. That tells the computer that it's flooded and to adjust its mixtures accordingly. It is a bit counter intuitive but works with fuel injection.

Is this happening right after a cold start or when the truck is warm?

Sounds to me like it could be any of a hundred different things. Could be a crank position sensor issue.

FFS...these trucks don't have carburetor ...Stalling the truck does not mean its flooded.

Also, holding down the gas pedal when trying to crank it actually cuts the fuel completely, as the computer thinks you are trying to clear a flooded engine (which isn't even happening in OPs case).
