I experienced a long start on a steep trail after a stall. It seemed like several seconds and scares the crap out of you on a technical section of a narrow steep trail. I think it started after a few seconds of cranking, but I haven’t experienced it since.

Clutch engagement smooths out after you remove the accumulator. Thats the big problem on the 3rd Gen 3.5 6MT

I have successfully flooded a lexus is300 with modern EFI as well. Bumping the starter without starting the engine one to many times while troublshooting. It sounded like the engine lost all compression and it took alot of cranking till it started a little smoky from all the excess fuel.

Regarding the issue in the taco, i have stalled mine a handfull of time, mostly in reverse and have never experienced a long start. Maybe a slightly longer start but never anything more than 2-3 sec

This clutch seems buttery smooth to me. I've only managed to kill it by dropping the clutch with parking brake set and a couple times with my work boots on trying to navigate the pedals.

All my other MTs were 25+ years old though.

Yes, you're right. When the engine stalled, I hurried to restart it. When I just pushed the clutch to the ground (actually, a new floor mat under it), I already turned the key. I even didn't hear the crank sound. Initially, I thought it was a battery problem. When I pushed the clutch just a little more, it started. Then I noticed that the new mat got moved under the clutch. I cut a hole in the new floor mat and have it hooked in position. Then the problem is gone. I stalled it once later when I parked on a slope and left the shift in 1st gear. Then I forgot it. came back and released the brake and clutch and stalled again. then immediately pushed the clutch in and restarted the engine. Yeah! :)

These 3.5ls like to flood out. Sometimes when i stall mine (curse the lack of low-end torque) it will flood - just hold the throttle down as you crank it, that will clear it out

Mine also just randomly cranks & won’t start, and then floods and takes like 3 crank attempts to get going... fun, hard to reproduce glitch that i’m hoping my soon-to-arrive OVtune corrects

I stalled mine this morning backing out of driveway. Took 3-5 times to re start. I figured it was flooded at the time. I just kept cranking.

I'd say an average of 3 sec a crank

    Interesting, sometimes happens to mine.
For example, after driving for a while, pull over to get gas, then when restarting it would take 2-3 tries. I dont crank it for too long, maybe like 2-3 secs. When its cold, it never does that. I dont think ive yet to stall this truck, so cant comment on that.

None of my other MT vehicles did that, i thought i was the only one with this longer start problem. Im not too worried about it tho, its been doing that since she was new.

Did OP find a solution to the stalling. I have a 2006 and a 2014 4cyl manual. The 2006 is fine but the 2014 is randomly very difficult to start after a stall. It does not happen all the time. It will be my just turned 16 year old son's daily driver so it is concerning.

Hi , did not read all the thread ,,, but I had a thought - if not already mentioned. if your battery is low/going bad it may start the truck but be even more drained after starting. It stalls and you restart again on an even lower charged battery - voltage drop form the start pulls down the truck voltage to where the anti theft/chip key circuit drops out for a second or so ... When it wakes up the key is in run. System say wait something wrong and requires key removal ..... I your Battery, connections and wiring OK ? Battery OK ?? JMO

Completely different engine, it's unlikely that if the solution was found that it would apply to yours.

Back to the OP (and I know this is an older thread and didn't read through all of the posts) but my first guess is that it has to do with the low pressure fuel pump that's currently under recall. I'm not exactly sure how these pumps work vs the high pressure pump, if they both are used simultaneously, or if they are used individually only in specific scenarios. For what it's worth, I've experienced this once before and my low pressure pump is indeed under recall.

Interesting. I did it again this morning. Started the car forgot something and took off with the brake on. Stalled and wouldn’t start unless I removed the key. But I have a service this morning and they’re replacing the fuel pump on recall. Maybe that will be the fix.

Have had this a couple times, if it doesn't fire right back up, I cycle the key to off, then it starts normally.

Did you ever figure out this issue? This happens to me everytime I stall out. Which typically happens in my driveway because it's steep and I guess I don't give it enough gas to get over the bump into my garage. I tried cranking, turned it off, took the key out, and restarted and it tries to start but wouldn't turn over. I have to repeat this process 4 times with about a 10 sec wait between each attempt before it would turn over. And even then it was a very slow start up. It drives me nuts. I've been driving MTs for 21 years, one of which was an 05 Taco, and the 18 Taco is the only one that has EVER done this. The MT is also so noisy. Makes me wish I still had my 05 Taco. Even at 167K that still didn't make as much noise as this one does when shifting. Toyota dealer says it's normal for the noise But I'm not a mechanic so whom am I to say otherwise

The fuel pump shutoff kicks in following a stall (or airbag deployment). I forget how to turn it back on, but it is in the manual.
