Wondering about maintenance schedule/oil change interval...

Bought a Tacoma SR5 with V6 engine a few days after the new year. Have about 3700 miles on it and was thinking I was due for an oil change at 3000 miles. Got a reminder a week ago:
"It's Time for Your Tacoma's First ToyotaCare Service" that said it included rotate tires, multipoint inspection and inspect/adjust fluids.
I see tire rotate is on the schedule at 5000 miles or 6 months. Seems they just did this about a month ahead of 6 months. And for regular service an oil change isn't until 10k miles which seems like too long.

My wife usually takes vehicles in for service (and knows that they often try to upsell stuff you don't need) so made an appointment. The appointment confirmation stated:

Requested Services: TIRE ROTATION WITH MULTI-POINT INSPECTION/TOP FLUIDS AND SET TIRE PRESSURE/RESET MAINTENANACE LIGHT

So now I am wondering if I jumped the gun on this visit. I also have the recall on the weld slag issue in the differential for them to inspect. I'm old and used to conventional oils with lower change intervals. This one calls out 0W20 oil which I think is only available as synthetic. Is the OEM factory oil synthetic? An early change for the first one is always a good idea I suppose...

Thinking I should put off the visit until 5k miles. Then include oil change (synthetic). Am I missing anything? I think oil changes are included for the first 24 months or something like that. I doubt they want to do more for free than the ones on the maintenance schedule so do I have to pay for ones prior to the recommended interval? I did do a trip towing so I could tell them I meet the "special conditions" that call for 5k mile oil change but it was in moderate weather and not at the max tow capacity so not really that stressful on the drive train.

There has been plenty of posts about oil changes in this forum. 0w-20 engine oil only comes in synthetic. Engine oil and engine oil filter is cheap. Spin bearing, burn bearing, need new engine, or reman, very expensive. You can insist dealer change engine oil and filter, they will charge you for it. Or do oil change, and filter yourself, but keep all the receipts.

They will not do the free oil change now unless you pay them for it. Went through that on daughter’s 24 Corolla. No way I was going to wait 10K for the first oil change. I changed it myself with a little over 900 miles. Incidentally, it takes the new 0W/8 oil but I’ll be using 0W/16, same as other daughter’s 20 RAV4.

0W8? I wonder when we'll be using straight 0W? Or if they'll go negative?

Change it every 10k miles with whatever synthetic is on sale, brand doesn't matter. Your engine will last far longer than you own the truck

THIS ^^^^^^^^. If you want it to last to the end of the warranty period, do 10K. If you want to last a lot longer, 5K and some would advocate sooner. Almost everyone driving anything is likely subject to the "severe" schedule in the owner's manual. Unless, of course, you start the truck each day, warm it up and drive 100 very gentle miles non-stop, no traffic and no very short trips. Check out "The Car Care Nut" and what he has to say about this, specifically with Toyotas. YouTube isn't everything, but the guy is a Toyota master mechanic with a lot of experience dealing with oil burning (or worse) Toyotas because folks chose the 10K route.

Fair enough. Can't argue with science. 10k just seems really extreme to me and many out there, even technicians.

Oil is a lot better than it used to be. So are tires, for that matter.

10k is the standard with synthetic oil. Your engine will outlast your ownership if you do 10k oil changes I'll guarantee it.
