Thanks again for all of your help- I tried prying it into that square formation. It won't budge. The passenger side rod has a little play in it, but the rest won't move.

The only additional task you can try without removing the transfer case is removing the detents and interlocks . Then try and move the forks to their nuetral location , then put the detents and interlocks back in place . It would be nice to find a busted spring but I highly doubt it

You will need a tiny pen magnet to remove the interlocks

@gearcruncher I want to undertake replacing a leaky gasket for my transfer case shift base. Should I just put the transfer case in neutral and then take the shift lever out? Can I expect any difficulty getting the lever back installed? 1999 R150F on my truck.

Thanks G.C.! I took the snap ring off and lifted the shift lever up and noticed the rubber seat is starting to fall apart. Looks like I will need to order an upgraded Blue seat from Marlin Crawler before I continue the repair.
