    Hi,

Truck worked fine yesterday, today it won't start. It cranks great but won't fire. When I turn the ignition switch to on position the gas gauge reads empty and the gas light is on. However, I just fueled up and double checked by topping it off, the tank is completely full.

Bummer is I have 40K miles so just past factory warranty. Might this be the fuel pump or a relay? Anything simple I can try, or it this a tow to dealer?

Can you hear the fuel pump priming when the key is in? It sounds like a mechanical hum that lasts about 8 seconds.

The fuel level sensor and the fuel pump are 2 different things -- just because your fuel gauge isn't reading doesn't mean the pump is necessarily bad.

Simple things first......did you check all of your fuses?
Both under the hood and in the cab?

As mentioned, may still be in warranty. Go thru your warranty/maint guide. If not in your glove box go to toyota.com -> owners - etc/etc

If not in warranty - here's some factory service info. I would look topside first to see if you are getting fuel. Breaking into the fuel pressure regulator circuit to test for pressure or testing fuel injector output might help to pass/condemn problems in the fuel pump.

    http://www.customtacos.com/tech.old/files/05FSM/

According to the following web site, 1995-2011 Tacoma's had fuel pump in the gas tank.

    http://www.tacomahq.com/643/toyota-tacoma-fuel-pump-replacement-failure/

Yours is a 2014. If no fuel is delivered topside and out-of-warranty, look around at the various components of your Tacoma's fuel system for fuel pump location at this site. Provide VIN first.

    http://www.partsouq.com

And last but not least, do not take the dealers word for it NOT being in warranty. Call Toyota at their 800 number. Speak with a cust. serv. rep.

Turns out I checked all the fuses, full of gas, so had it towed to a Toyota dealer. It seems some rodent got above my gas tank and chewed through the wires. This is a bit scary, I hope they didn't chew anywhere else. Apparently, more and more dealers are seeing rodents chewing through wires. Anyway, I have a big bill but fixed. I have read that dryer sheets and Peppermint oil are good deterrents for keeping rodents away from your car. But rodents chewing through wires was something I am a bit shocked about. I live in the city with none around that I'm aware of. I parked in on my farm just 2 days, but not sure if it just happened or happened before.

huh, now that you mention it I have read a few stories like this over the past couple of months that I've been a member here. One guy had his truck parked for several weeks while he was out of the country, came back to his truck full of rat feces in the engine bay and chewed up wires. It's one of those scenarios that sounds crazy but makes perfect sense at the same time, lol. Sorry to hear about that @34blast, hope the damage wasn't too painful $$$.

Funny how we install car alarms, GPS monitors and such on our cars to prevent theft, but maybe we should start placing mouse traps around our trucks as well just to be extra safe

    Nice link

My next quest is to find the best way to keep it from happening again. I have heard peppermint oil but nothing for sure yet.

I am a bit worried since I park my truck out away from civilization when fishing, camping, and hiking. Would hate to be left stranded up trails or places in the wilderness.

Mist the whole vehicle in hot sauce concentrate. Just don't touch your eyes or your "main vein."

    Thanks for sharing, nice read.

Different thing but my cat Ozzy I rescued 2 yrs ago loves to chew plastic bags. Never had a cat do that before, a little poking around revealed plastic bags (shopping) are made with a chemical that tastes like fish to cats..

No real mods. A small leveling kit to put a little bigger tire under it and a Beefier rear suspension with Rancho shocks, for towing.
i know this is an old topic. i just ran across it trying to find the CPS location on my 2007 4.0L.

but did you know... rodent damage is covered under your comprehensive portion of your insurance policy. i had a mouse-vermin type of critter chew through some wires to the knock sensor. $2000 repair bill, when all said and done. but since mechanic found mouse munching, it was covered under insurance.

    cheers

My dad had his neighbor's cat chew on a wiring harness under the hood 2 or 3 times over the course of a couple months. Luckily there was enough slack that it could be spliced back together, but one more time would have meant a hefty repair bill. The cat mysteriously disappeared....
