Both stoves have fresh air vents by them that draw from a volume of air that is replenished by fresh air

image.jpg My garage furnace. Heats it up pretty good although not sure I like having ignition source in shop. Recently installed cement board behind the stove pipe, that wall got hot. Directly above where the picture ends the stove pipe goes into larger insulated pipe going directly to the roof. Eventually might go to outdoor wood furnace for garage and home.

Thinking about adding a small wood stove in my living room. One question I have is should I go with single wall stove pipe or double wall stove pipe up to the ceiling where I transition into the chimney pipe? I know the single wall will give me more heat transfer into the living space, but at only approx 4-5' of it, is it going to make that much of a difference? Double wall stove pipe would be safer and lower the distance to combustibles, but I don't really need that. Thoughts?

Double wall or insulated pipe will produce less creosote because the smoke doesn't have a chance to cool off before it exits. It'll probably draft better, too.

On the other hand, if you're using properly seasoned wood and cleaning regularly it should be a non-issue either way. :notsure:

^ What he said. I had a freestanding stove with double wall pipe and it heats up just fine.

Well I broke down and bought a small wood stove this morning for the house. Won't go in until early Jan, but I'm still stoked. :rimshot:

Make sure it has a Ash pan. Running a stove without one can be a PITA. Also it is better to have a stove that puts more heat than needed than less.

What's the consensus on fresh air intakes? Otherwise the neg pressure created by the draft would just suck more cold infiltrated air into the house, right?

Oh, no ash pan either, just a cheap stove, something to screw around with and lower the gas bill a touch.

If you can hook up a fresh air intake directly to the stove that is the most efficient

It's pretty nice, but not perfect. It is two speed and while low is nice and quiet, it doesn't move any air. The high setting is a bit loud, but it moves a ton of heat. It automatically starts and stops based on the temperature of the stove. I've gotten used to the volume of the blower. When I wake up in the middle of the night and hear it still running, I know there's still enough hot coals to throw another log on.

I've lived in the woods since 2008 and have had my fair share of wood stoves. Jotul has always been my favorite. I feel the steel they use is superior to all the other stoves I've owned.

Currently my wood pile is about a cord each of white oak, red fir, and juniper with about half a cord of cedar mixed in there. Wood heat is my only source of warmth and I take great pride in being able to keep my house nice and toasty throughout the year.
