Missed out on a one of a kind stove. My grandparent's house sold just before I had a chance to buy this from the estate.

Ah HA. That style of stove might explain the steamer we have around here somewhere. It has a hollow conical bottom and never really got hot enough to make steam on top of our wood stove. But it might just fit very nicely on top of a stove that style.

Correct. They used to make a lot of those proprietary steamers. I actually have several old cast iron pans that are cast with a lip around the edge so that you could remove the 'burner' plates from an old wood-fired cookstove and put the pan directly over the heat.

Edit- They still work well, too. GF and I cook with them on the weekends during the winter when we're running the cookstove.

I'm relatively new to Michigan. We got a wood stove the second year in place of the decorative fireplace that took almost as much heat add it gave.
After a couple years of locating, cutting, splitting, transporting and stacking. I switched to a wood pellets
I'm much happier with the convenience and availability along with heat control ranging from low to Florida summer. The hopper holds 3 bags $5 each and will burn up to 24 hours pr bag and burn all 3 in between cleaning out the ash and clearing the window. (20 minutes to cool and 5 minutes to clean)
More than anything I hated working all day in good weather in summer or fall when I could be building trails or riding my bike. At 51 in still doing stunts on skateboards and bicycles but heavy lifting destroys my lower back and can put me in a world of hurt for weeks or even months at a time.

Cutting some very green eucalyptus up today before my dad will work on my AR-15! Done in 30 mins. Can imagine what this would take to do by hand!

We've had 17 white and black oak tree cut in our yard, most bone wood, some still green. Bought a little splitter to deal with all the wood I've bucked, and will be bucking and splitting into January... By my estimates, about 7 cords... Wouldn't be surprised if it were more though. And that's not including the timber we're having milled for columns and beams for our house... Craziness. At least splitting wood keeps you warm twice! :D

Wow, my pellet burner only needs ash pan emptied and cleaning once per ton. I knock the ash from the heat exchanger walls and burn pot down to the pan about once a day.
    "Florida summer":rofl:That's good!

Well, storm came through my area a couple weeks ago and I was out of power for 5 days. At one point, my thermostat said 79 inside, and I am pretty sure 20s outside. I lined up mostly pine in the fireplace, and some of the steel was turning orange from the heat.

I love my woodfire. Also getting into the maple buried in my woodpile. That stuff lasts for awhile.

Cold in SoCal? Does that mean it's down to 60?

Please educate me on pellet stoves vs. wood stoves/inserts.
I grew up with wood heat and used it till 2000 when I was forced to move to town. I had both a free standing wood stove and an insert in the country. I have missed the warmth of wood heat since. Living in town I have no place to dump ashes and no place to get wood. Thus a pellet stove would be my only answer. It would have to go in the fireplace in a small living room with very high ceilings (split entry house).
    1. Does pellet heat feel as good as wood heat?
    2. Do they make pellet inserts?
    3. Based on some of the comments above some pellet stoves produce minimum ashes (?).
Any info on this would be welcomed. Pushing 60 my bones crave the heat I knew in my younger days.
