I can't speak for the heat output on a pellet stove. As far as I am aware, they don't come as inserts. The pellets themselves are wood, and will leave some ash, but if you let it cool for a day or 2, you can easily dump it in your weekly trash.

At my last house, I had a wood stove at one end, and propane insert at the other end of the house. There was a 100 gallon tank that was strictly for the propane fireplace. When I wanted the heat output from it, I flipped a switch. When it hit a certain temperature, the fan kicked on and blew hot air out. If you are dealing with pellets, you have to be able to bring in 50# bags of pellets to feed the stove. I would really suggest looking into the propane insert, or if you have gas in your house, a gas insert. If you lose power, gas/propane will still push radiant heat, while the pellet stove will burn out because the pellets still have to be pushed in. On the propane tank I had, it was a rented tank, and there was a truck that came by quarterly to fill it.

I have 6" of snow from the last few days. 40 is my daytime high, and I wear shorts at that high temp

Smar thanks for the info. More to consider. I do have a gas fire place. Not sure how much heat a gas insert would make without the blower (if power went out).

Our pellet stove is stand alone. The fireplace that was there was a metal upside down funnel looking like thing. We have a generator that goes into action whenever the grid goes down. Some pellet stove have an ash pan that can be emptied while in operation but mine does not. We shut down, clean and restart every 1 to 3 days

I my area home heating oil#2 is $1.60 a gallon. I'm about to shut my stove off and save my wood for the colder weather. Log lengths cost me$100 a cord, for a 200 a month I can heat with oil.

I have to admit I'm doing the same - turning up the thermostat and easing back on the wood burning. Oil is cheaper than wood this year for sure.

    1. It does to me. If you want it warmer turn it up.
    2. Yes
    3. I empty my ash pan on the lawn. (It seems to like it) The pan fills about once per ton of pellets. A ton lasts 1-2 months depending on temps. My bags of pellets weigh 40#. My stove cools enough to work with in 30-45 minutes. Again this depends on outside temps (it circulates outside air for combustion) I can have it going again in under 5 minutes (propane torch:thumbsup:) putting out heat in 15. My ash pan holds maybe 10# of ash, I've never actually checked.
    Good luck.

No you don't,time and equipment cost about $50 a cord as least. I used to get my wood free from a wood dump at work, three hours of time per cord loading and unloading. Now I pay $700 for 8or 9 cords dumped at my house and split at my leisure.

No I'm not, in the past I insisted on never paying for wood. After four years of gathering free wood from
roadsides and the wood dump at work,it took to much time and wear and tear on my truck. Thirty to forty, 45 mile trips, annually, with 1/2 ton of logs beat my Tacoma. Now I work two overtime shifts a year and my wood, log lengths, gets delivered to my home and I split at my leisure.

Personally I hate every aspect of gathering splitting stacking wood for the winter. So I am saying this on behalf of one of my friends. I get my wood for free. My friend owns a forest with plenty of Deadwood a couple miles from my house. Throughout the year I gather a few chunks at a time and split with an axe. This is my exercise and stress relief. The money I have saved on therapy and fitness programs or going to the gym more than makes up for the gas in my chainsaw or Chevy
