Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

I was saying the heat from an insert will radiat out into the room via convection currents when the electricity is out so no blower fan

 

They do make battery back ups for pellet stoves, or you could get a back up Genset. Probably not a bad idea anyway.

We've been heating 1500sqft with a Harman P43 6+yrs. Our house is 100+ yrs old not nearly as efficient as newer homes.
Pellet stoves are more efficient than wood stoves. Cons are you have to buy pellets and you need electricity to run it. So in the long run more costly to operate than a wood stove.

 

Mine exits through the wall with a "candy cane" outside. I can easily remove and sweep every fall.

 

We have ours in the living room. It does get quite warm at times. A good fan works wonders.
The leaky roof thing is one reason I went through the wall. The top of my candy cane is only about 8ft above grade. So a lot less pipe to buy and care for I've seen people just mount a top hat sticking out the wall. Not good IMO, staines the side of the house.

 

The more chimney you have inside the conditioned space the more heat you get and less creosote , a vertical pipe also offers better draw and less creosote build up

 

Here is the stove my mom has in her basement. She burns about 2 cord per year, using it primarily on the colder days or days where they could lose power.

I believe it is a late 70s/early 80s Fisher Grandpa bear. Apparently one of the largest stoves Fisher made. It puts out a lot of heat!

Little dirty/dusty since she hadn't used it this year. I went up to clean it up and light it the other night for her.

Info I found says it's good for 2250 square feet if it is indeed a grandpa bear. I believe it is, since the inside of one of the doors is stamped "GP" and it looks larger than pictures I find of the comparable grandma bear.

Whenever I light it, I leave the vents barely open. It puts out enough heat at that point to heat their 1400 sq foot basement to the mid 70s and warm the floor above enough so the furnace almost never runs. If I open it up much more than that, it gets overwhelmingly hot fast.

Seems to burn well. I go up there and sweep their chimney every fall and there is very little buildup.

 

Mine was great . The screw in dampers actually worked so well you could basically put the fire out by closing it all the way

 

Same deal with this one. If you close them off it will just about die.

It actually has a screen that you can put in with the doors open. Neat idea if it's on a main floor somewhere.

Yeah, they get hot!

I think the kettle on top may have come with it. The handle is of the same style as the handles on the stove doors.

It also has feet that look like bear claws, but they are cut off in that photo.

I actually just posted to that. Wanted to see if they can narrow down grandpa vs grandma and the year built.

 

My Federal Airtight has a screen. Dumb idea if you ask me. I tried using it once and pretty much all it did was make the room smoky and the fire unhappy.

 

Same with this one. No smoke, but the fire gets too strong. Best results with that one are with the doors closed and the dampers just barely cracked open.

 

This thread is TLDR but is it just for the wood burners (stoves) or all related pics as well?
