Better to buy the bigger stove and do a light burn if it gets too hot. Plus a longer run time per load as mentioned earlier. Whichever stove you get, get the blower.

Not a fan of fans here. They make noise, require maintenance, and tie you to the grid. Since you're working from a fairly clean slate, talk to the designer and/or builder about the best ways to encourage convection flow to move the heat.

Put in an HRV and use it to recirculate the air throughout the house . For a no power helper you can get some Ecofans

I love my Pacific Energy Alderlea T5 , that would work well for your square footage and allows 18" logs to be stacked lengthwise plus it has a cooking top surface for extended power outages

Cut a load of oak in the fog and drizzle, side boards worked well.

Adding an HRV is a good idea, thanks. I've been trying to think of a permanent way to circulate air, since I won't have a forced air system. I have room in the basement for one of those.

The Pacific Energy models look nice. Any reason why you chose a cast iron stove instead of steel?

Its a hybrid , it has a steel firebox and guts with cast iron exterior panels

    Best of both worlds

This is our Regency H2100. It heats about 1600 sq/ft, and is very clean burning and efficient. Once up to temperature, the chimney emits almost no smoke.

The old fireplace sucked lots of heat out of the room, but this wood stove is sitting forward, so most heat goes into the room. It can burn 8 hours when packed.

Before anyone says it is butt ugly, well, it is butt ugly.

It can heat our home in Maryland when the power is out and boil water too.

We have had it three years.

Same stove I have. While it's certainly not a work of art, I wouldn't go so far as to call it ugly. Especially with it's HUGE glass door. It lets out so much light on a full burn that I can see its glow through the window in the portico, which is on the opposite side of the room...and I'm in the road out front.

Also, I've never been able to get more than 4 - 5 hours of burn out of mine, but I bought it used and it probably needs a new door gasket.

(I think the big black square behind it that covers the fireplace is ugly.)

End of fireplace season, beginning of firewooding season. This is what I have left from winter. New permits acquired, time to stock up!

Shop stove made from truck wheels and well casing for pipe. Added used oil injection on drip system which greatly added to the heat output and the wood lasted a lot longer.

I need to get started on my wood for this year, but right now it's garden stuff that's taking priority.

I see that you are in California... and that looks like beach drift wood on the right.

    Permits for what?

The beach would be a helluva drive for me. Those are lengths of Canyon Live Oak, killed in a forest fire in 2005, that I pulled out of the San Bernardino National Forest using the required fuel wood permit.

Burning wood from the beach is no good for your woodstove and chimney and it stinks
