A chainsaw is an investment in your wood fire production, it also can reduce or increase your fatigue when preparing firewood. I'd suggest doing some research on commercial chainsaws, or at least the "Farm" or "Rancher" saws. I generally run a bar length that is 2"-4" less than the recommended maximum length for the saws I use most often. I have a 12" bar on my 30cc limbing saw, and a 18" on my 56cc saw right now.

I have a Husky 51 and I run through about 6-8 cords of mixed size hardwood per year with it. It's light enough for long periods of overhead limbing but still has enough grunt for the average butt piece. However, if I'm cutting something larger than 18" or so I frequently find myself wishing for more saw. :notsure:

I'd agree with that. I used to run an 18" bar on my Husky but I dropped down to a 16" a few years ago and there's a noticeable difference in power.

Canadian Logic. Just like vikings. :blahblah:

I agree. ive been using my grandfathers ranch 455 but I moved far enough away from him now that its more so a pain in the butt to try and get the saw for when I need it. his is pretty much all weve ever had and since its one of the larger ones compared to the 41, im sure id definitely notice the power difference.

if only the damn things weren't so pricey!

I put a 20" bar on a mccollugh mac1010. It's an old saw, and mccollugh runs louder than the average chainsaw, but ithas been running great for me since I got it a couple years ago. Before that, it sat on a shelf and didn't get used for several years. It came with a 16" bar.

In looking for a saw, find one that is designed to run a wider chain for the hardwood. I used my cousin's homelite saw and had to have it at almost full speed to set it on a piece of wood or it wouldn't keep the chain spinning.

I'll trade a cord of split pine for a half cord of madrone if you can come to me. I'll even send you with the seasoned pine (been out there at least a year, probably closer to two through freezing winter and hot summer)

Got all the wood moved , took me pretty much all day and I'm officially bushed , some of the madrone rounds had to have weighed 150 lbs

The cedar was bigger but felt like lifting balsa wood after all the madrone lol

I underestimated the volume of wood , it seems more like 2 1/2-3 cords

I'll update my offer. I'll trade you 2 parts pine for 1 part madrone. I have about 5 cords split and stacked, mostly pine, and most of it seasoned. I just don't have time to go west then cross the border.

Jesus, those big rounds are Madrone? When I lived in NorCal I never saw one that big. They MUST have weighed a ton!! You have a log splitter? That cedar is easy peezy with a maul and wedge but the Madrone is a different animal all together. Not that you dont know what your doing either, just seems like a lot of swinging time.

    The Oz likes swinging.

I already did some test splitting , this stuff is luckily in the window of drying where it splits fairly easily

The big rounds in the back of the truck in that pic are cedar , the madrone was about 20"

The biggest madrone I've seen here was about 6' through at the butt

If it's anything like the local Oak it's easy when it's green and easy when it's completely seasoned, but anything in between really sucks.

Went and picked up some of the wood I'm trading some carpentry for , there is a mix there of madrone , fir , cedar and what I think is cypress

This stuff came from the removal of an old hedge that will be replaced by the fence I'm going to build , the bark looks like juniper or redwood but the wood is white / yellow and there is really no aroma when you split it , I think it is a cypress

Feast or famine lol , now I've gotta split it all

The bark looks like cypress. Not much pitch on the inside, but little globs that seep out toward the bark? One of my favorite camping firewoods for the ease of starting and crackling ambience when burning.

Yeah , there seems to be a moisture / sap build up in the outer 1 1/2 - 2" of the wood near the bark
