Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

So , got all the fir , cedar and cypress split and stacked . I kept the cypress seperate because I don't think it will be dry by this season so I'm just going to stack it in with the madrone that I'll be splitting for next year

Between the fir , cedar and whats left over in my house woodshed from last year we'll stay warm all winter plus now I'll be back to being a year ahead once I get all the madrone put away

Nothing like splitting in hot weather, lol. Everything sticks to you.

 

Started splitting my madrone rounds tonight , figured I would pick away at it after work at my leisure seeing how I won't be trying to burn it this year

 

That's a beautiful piece of wood. I'd almost hate to burn it. Reminds me of a much larger manzanita tree.

 

Sometimes all of the wood through the whole log is that ruby colour

It's my favourite tree. I planted some seedlings on my property up near qualicum.

I've seen a couple real monster specimens. There's a doozy on Uvic residences. But they grow slowly. Must take a couple hundred years to get 3 feet across at the trunk.

 

Yeah , kinda depends , I've seen some with extremely tight growth rings and some with a bit wider grain

Here's a big piece of madrone that was a dead tree taken down at a client's house I was at today

 

Well this was fun to split

 

Did you do a saw split with it?

 

Wedged it in half through the branches then 8lb and 6lb mauls

 

Nice. Looked like a sledge & wedge candidate if you didn't saw split it, I thought.

 

There's a whole bunch of crotch pieces like that in this pile , luckily the wood is dry enough that it will split through the branches otherwise it would definitely be chainsaw splitting

 

I've got a bunch of oak like that this year. I've just been tossing them off to the side so far, though, haha! When I get everything else split and stacked I'm just going to take an afternoon and deal with all of the bitchy pieces at once.

 

Yeah , I usually have a pile like that too but in my scrounge-a-thon to fill the woodshed for this winter I split them all up haha

 

Gas powered log splitter is the king of splitting crotch pieces. Especially because you can accurately line up the wedge on a crack and drive through that.
