Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

It rained like a mother last night, and, in addition, it was incredibly windy. The wind blew the heavy rain under my porch and soaked every last bit of firewood I have. I had to start the fire this morning with my good scrap lumber I keep stored in my shop and some leftover wood pellets from the defunct pellet stove. The rest of the firewood is now stacked next to the hot stove, drying.

You don't have a wood rack by the stove ?

 

I'm jealous of all you guys and lasses with fireplaces, especially this time of year.

 

I made a rack with my girls out of stuff I had laying around. Works well though.

 

I've got a small basket that holds about 6 hours worth of wood. Might look into an indoor rack now.

 

I slapped this together from left over lumber. It gets the crap beat out of it, but it has held up for over ten years.

This holds about a weeks worth. I put it away in the barn come summer.



The cardboard trays are used to light kindling.

 

Funny my father has something exactly like that ....he has used it for 20 years.

The easiest way to light wood, regardless of wet or dry, use a road flare. Stack your wood in with a small hole for the flare, the light the flare and shove it in, then close the door

 

I removed the contractor grade gas fireplace and installed a wood burner. I also added the stone veneer, blue stone hearth and mantel.
This almost heats the entire house.

 

We've got a old wood stove I retired last year.... my house is just to small to keep this thing going strong.... planning to get a smaller new one next winter!!! I need to know the best for a 1200 square foot house?

Looks good , was the gas stove in an existing masonry chimney or was the chase big enough to upgrade from the gas flue to a metal insulated chimney for wood appliances ?

 

The chase was big enough to accomodate. The chimney is wood frame which also has the oil furnace flew inside. I removed the old gas fire box and flew and had the fireplace contractor install the new woodburner.

 

Nice , you got lucky , usually a gas chase gets framed too small to accomidate a wood chimney and set backs

 

My wife and I framed the house and we frame the chase larger than required.

 

I use a propane torch to light my pellet stove. Found the gel starting fluid was messy and slow.

 

We have a 43,000btu pellet stove that heats 1400 sq/ft

 

I collect the bark and the little shards of wood that come off when I'm splitting and stuff them in a grain bag. With a twist of newspaper a handful or two of that stuff makes great kindling.

And the pellet stove has an automatic igniter, so that one all I have to do is flip the thermostat on.
