I grew up lighting fires with "fat wood". For those unfamiliar with the term, it's pine wood that is heavily saturated in pitch. Usually found in branch crotches as it pools there when a pinion or other pitchy pine dies. You chop little pinky sized pieces out, light one with a match, and place it inside the regular kindling "log house" for a rapid start fire.

I don't harvest as much pine as my dad does, so I don't have a lot of fat wood. I generally use paper or cardboard, or, if there are still some coals from the previous night, I let the kindling get hot on those and give a quick shot with a propane torch. My flue doesn't draw well enough to try blowing on the coals without filling the living room with smoke.

Watching my nephew get his first chainsaw lesson.

Kindling, every fall cut back your woody landscape plants (spirea) and tie small bundles with sisal. In a hot shed for a few weeks, they are bone dry.

Actually my wife, who happens to be a English professor, tells me by misspelling and using improper punctuation I am "Helping to dumb down society". So I stand corrected. Won't happen again, I apologize.:)

I use mine as a general guide, but I don't follow it religiously. Since I don't have a glass window on the cookstove I use it to tell at a glance if I need to open or close the damper a little.

I'm all for cleaner air, believe climate change is real and is happening, and general tree hugger stuff. This is going to fly like a lead balloon. Even I know it is ridiculous to say don't burn so much in Alaska. Until the EPA can also offer comparable in cost methods of heating, they won't get anywhere.

Yeah, it's a crock. This is akin to telling people in Florida and GA not to run their AC units when it's 100 degrees & 1000% humidity.
