Good thing you didn't find that with the saw. I ruined a chain this summer because of a barbed wire fence that had grown into the tree a few decades ago. I had to do a lot of filing to get it cutting correctly again, lol.

I have 3 old glass marbles I found in a giant red oak tree that fell over in the city park. I was splitting the wood from the fork of the tree on my log splitter they were about a foot below the surface. Figured a crow had carried them in the tree years ago.

May have been a blue jay too; they're crazy about shiny objects. Little feathered hoarders.

Getting some firewood cut up for next year. Mostly ash and cherry. Cut what i could today. Some is either frozen to the ground or to each other. Used my log roller to break it loose and then cut it. Few more weekends of cutting and splitting left in this project.

Winter is a crappy time to cut. Good time to split though.

A question, that might have been discussed before...do you HAVE to use "Bar and Chain Oil" in a chainsaw, or will motor oil work just as well for that application? I have heard both sides of the argument, so...
I have a friend who is VERY experienced with all types of power tools, contractor for years, who just saves his motor oil from oil changes on his truck, and uses it in the saw instead of the bar oil. NOT as fuel mix, of course, just as bar oil.
    Thoughts??

    For me, my opinion.
I guess it depends on how much you paid for the chainsaw. I mean, why ask if you can use something other than what the manufacturer recommends?

I would never run used motor oil. My thoughts are as follows. They are entirely different viscosities and I believe that the bar oil is metered out at a rate proportional to the chain speed. My guess is that used motor oil would dispense faster than anticipated, leak out when not in use, not to mention its environmental impacts.

Sectioned a downed tree in the woods this afternoon, and split several tractor loads by hand. I haven't used a maul for it's intended purpose in probably ten years. The good news is that after a few logs I was back in the rhythm. Bad news is that I'm already sore. I'm going to try to do all of next years wood by hand, but we'll see how that goes. My grandfather built a splitter probably thirty years ago based around an old vw engine that we still use regularly, may just end up dragging that thing over here.

I'd like to see a photo of that VW powered splitter. Long time ago VW mechanic. Those engines were used for lots of applications - buzz saws were a common application. Around 2000 I saw one that powered a liquid nitrogen pump to offload the tanker.

My dad has friends around here that do that. I can afford to drop the 5 dollars for my new Husky xp and my old Dolmar pro saws. If your living on a tight budget....I say go for it. If you can drop the 5 bucks, I recommend it, because moter oil must fly ....everywhere.

If I had to I would find the right viscosity gear oil, but then if I was having to look for the right oil, I would just get the right oil.

Viscosity? I dunno. I've poured chain oil in freezing weather and the stuff was like molasses. I've poured it in hot weather and it was just thick oil. Any metering that might be happening would have to deal with the difference.

I've used motor oil in chain saws. I don't think it necessarily ruins anything but I also don't think I'd make a habit of it. Besides, the local garage heats their shop with used motor oil.
