16" log? I'd run out of gas in my chainsaw.

My Hearthstone can take up to a 21" split, but I usually cut mine at around 18" because that length fits the cookstove too. Plus giving a little extra space between the wood and the door keeps the glass cleaner on the Hearthstone.

16"-18" firewood is pretty standard around these parts

My Alderlea can take 20" pieces IIRC , my firewood is 16-18"

    Nice. Vermont Castings?

The Cut/Split/Delivered stuff around here is pretty commonly 16-18 as well.

Our first stove would take 20” but was happier at 18”. The new one is good for 22+.

My parent's Defiant takes wood of around that length as well.

Those extra few inches make the weight of hardwoods 'different' when throwing rounds around to split.

True. Same with when you're lugging splits into the house to burn. On the other hand, if you're cutting them all to that length, you don't notice the weight difference (or at least I don't).

I like the longer ones for the allnighters. And when locust, they are really heavy.

First fire today, laundry hanging in the basement to dry. That's when I know summer's over, laundry inside.

Over half done in felling for next year's burning. Hickory, ash, White oak, 1 red cedar for aroma (actually a juniper, purple inside, beautiful smell), even a dead maple this year. Then there's the bucking, splitting and stacking to do...my October is spoken for, or at least a good portion of it.

I found 2 cracks in my Pacific Energy Alderlea T6 yesterday. The firebox at the front, the cracks are extending outward but not past the door gasket yet. Monday a call to PE to find out about the lifetime warranty (it's 9 years old), repair or replace?

Can you take a pic ? Just looked at my T5 and wonder where you would be seeing a crack develop

I just split my all-nighters larger. Usually there's a knot in the middle, as added incentive to leave them as a larger split

    Damn, that sucks.

I suppose one advantage of plate steel fireboxes, though, is that if they don't cover it something like that's fairly easy to drill a stop hole, weld the crack, and grind it flush again. :notsure:

That's what I'd been thinking, stop hole, weld and grind. The cracks stop (so far) right under where the door gasket lands. Just a question of getting a welder in the basement...the stove weighs a lot, it's not going to a welding shop I hope.

I'll see what the PE warranty performance is today.

I think the cracks are actually in the air delivery tubes on either side of the firebox front. No chance of smoke leakage, but uncontrolled air supply? Are there cracks elsewhere I can't see? Who knows right now.

On the other hand, it may be a non-issue, if they cover it under the warranty.
