We actually had snow today. Almost 4,000 ft in Western North Carolina. It did not stick, but weird to see.

Those temps sounds great. We don’t have anywhere near the weather you get on the east coast. Here where I live in the Sierra foothills it’ll get below freezing most nights and only high teens (F) at the most, then by the next afternoon it’ll be in the 40-50s F.

Most people I’ve talked too only go through a ton to a ton and a half a season, usually. This year two.

In fact all the stores ran out of pellets locally, which I guess could be a concern.

Our temps are colder generally, and this is my only heat source that I use. You’ll figure out how much you need after a year of burning it. Just buy extra the first year, then sell them high at the end of the season to those who didn't buy enough!! Lol

I always get 4 no matter what. Most years i burn them all until gone. I’ll start burning as the temps drop in Oct, and go until i run out.

Its nice having the thermostat. Some days in Oct and March, it’ll only run a few hours at night, and not at all during the day. When I'm out of town, I’ll bring in enough bags to get through, and the wife just has to load them up. No starting a fire, hauling wood, etc. that’s the biggest advantage over a wood burner.

Unless there's a power outage. No electric, no pellet. Wood just ticks along. I've watched friends clean their pellet stove...more work than my wood burner. No thanks.

Seventy five degrees? I'd have to walk around naked. And nobody would like that.

I have a generator for those extended power outages that last more than a few hours, and a battery backup that will run it for a few hours. Cleaning takes me 1/2 hour a week, and maybe an hour for the monthly. It’s a lot less work than cutting, hauling, splitting and stacking wood.

Living in the Sierra Foothills (I'm guessing on the west side) you have a nearly unlimited access to sources of firewood, both commercially and personally gathered.

Holy crap. Y'all's stoves must never shut off. I thought I had it bad with my pellet stove at the last place I rented in NM, and I was only burning 1-1.5 tons over the winter. The pellet stove heat was nice though.

I know, just answering the questions about pellets.

I don't have a free or convenient source of wood, or i’d be burning it as well. Buying and delivery was more than pellets for me.

I may go to coal for the basement, as they have direct vent units now with no class a chimney needed. Coal is plentiful and cheap around here.

I do. Have a chord unsplit oak rounds in my yard right now. Had a tree come down earlier this winter. Also my parents property could also keep me in wood for as long as they live there.

For me the logistics of finding a spot that’s convenient to get the wood stacked and then back into the house is proving to be tough. Topography doesn’t work in my favor.

Pallet of pellets would be no big deal in that sense.

Yup, run it 24/7 when the cold really settles in. We adjust the flame for more or less heat as needed. Burn about a bag a day when it gets really cold. Right now our burn times are tapering off. Today the house was cooler inside than the outside temps. Definitely not running now.

Ah, but I"m too cheap for pellets. $1000 for a chainsaw every 15 years...wood on the property...couldn't justify it. Wifey said once "do we grow pellets?"
