I've been cutting for around 20 years; I can eyeball it to an inch or so on either side of 18" pretty easily by now. So I'm not used to going through and trimming up cuts, lol.

Eyeballing is great until you go from cutting 4inch diameter to 24inch diameter. I find "16" inch can suddenly end up at 20 or so. The block just looks too small to be 16", so it ends up longer. PITA when you're trying to fit in the stove. Measuring with the bar doesn't work for me either, 24inch bars so I don't have to squat or bend over.

New hydraulic seals and a fresh coat of Cat Yellow paint. Now it's time to get my butt in gear and start splitting before winter surprises us.

Felling and pull out done. Bucking complete. Now I just have to get the splitter and tractor for splitting (worked in amongst son-in-law's farm work). Then moved from woodyard to woodshed. This is for next year's burn. Last September I couldn't work it at all, it was too hot! Had to work in October. Should all be done by Oct 15.

Just measure out to a spot on the bar from your sight line, either use the lettering or notch a line. Wicked fast.

Then lay the bar on the wood, and cut 'there'. If in doubt, go a little shorter.

Tried on link but doesn’t work. I’m shopping wood stoves not made in China . We don’t need it much down here but will be primary heat in barndominium.
I have a question on flue pipe. Should there be minimum amount of pipe inside or can I run it exposed for a good amount inside? 14’ to ceiling and I plan on going out wall not ceiling

@ralfnjan how did you make out with the cracks on your Pacific Energy stove? I remember you saying you were checking on the PE warranty but I don't remember the resolution

Some things are constrained by local/national building codes. The first thing I would do is to download the install manual for a stove you are considering and read it front to back a few times, it has clearances for the appliance and may answer your question, I know they have 2 pages dedicated to chimneys.

    +1
I printed and read the manual quite a few times. Then I designed the wall, base area, and pipes. 8 inches here, 16 inches here, etc. It seemed complicated until I read it a few times.
The pipe manufacturer has a lot of information too.
But I got little good information from my local stove shop. Some good some ended up being totally wrong. "Sales people".

What's everyone got for indoor firewood storage? Last year I just threw down a scrap piece of 1" sheathing and stacked on that, but that won't fly with the SO this year.

Im struggling with throwing cash money down on some chintzy pot metal rack, I'd prefer to build one but I've already got so many projects going on.

I have a big crock that may have been used to make sour kraut, It is at least 35 gallons. I can fit 2 days worth of wood in it and if it is going to snow/rain I just stack some extra next to it on a waterhog mat. I keep my kindling in a 5 gallon crock next to it. I used an old wood toy box before that. It would be nice to have a bunch of wood inside but I am all set with the bugs/rodents. Last year I somehow ended up with a flying squirrel in the house.

I've got two, one for each woodstove, and they're both of the 'chintzy pot metal' variety. I bought them both when we moved in, and they're both still working fine and are very handy. The one downstairs holds a week's worth of firewood for whole-house heating purposes, and the one by the cookstove I just fill as I need it. Burning that stove once a week (Sundays) the rack usually only needs to be refilled about once a month or so.

But with the middle section removed to fit my available space.

Both are holding up fine, no issues with either one after 7 years of use.

    @Noelie84.
Now looking at that hoop style.
We have been using 2 large baskets. They are good, and are strong enough.
But, if you are happy with it, I may look.
They are at Lowes and Tractor Supply.

Yeah, it doesn't hold a ton of wood, but it works a lot better than the plastic tote that was there when we first moved in. That didn't hold very much wood at all.
Of course, it was feeding a considerably smaller stove, too.

Nice. I know my girlfriend would probably prefer the looks of the hoop type, I like the downstairs one better. Looks like it's about 6' long with the middle section out?
