We've been clearing land at work so I probably took about.. 50 truck loads this year. Hickory, oak, and sugar maple mainly. I bought a splitter because of that hickory. In the next few years I'll have to start sourcing it, but I can cut it out of the state forest for I think $10/cord.

    Using this with default values:

    https://www.woodheat.com/calculator

Oil would have to be at $3.5/gallon to be more expensive. Electricity would have to be around $.11/kwh.

How is burning wood economical if you're buying it at those prices?

Well, around here electricity is around $.17/kwh and oil is currently right around $2.50/gal for #2 and $3/gal for K1. And whenever we get a cold snap, the cost for fuel oil always spikes.

Also, that assumes a stove with an efficiency % in the mid-60's. My Hearthstone is rated in the mid 70's, and I've seen some of the more modern stoves tickling 80%

Honestly, I think a big part of it is that people who are buying wood at $400 a cord aren't using it as a primary heat source; they're using it as a backup or supplemental heat source. I know a few people who buy cut/split/delivered, and they heat primarily with a furnace/boiler. The wood is just for when they're home on the weekends or if they lose power.

I don't have a dog in this fight but I like bucking and splitting wood and running the bonfire.

Moved into a new home in April of this year with a willow tree. Had a storm in May/June so I got my first chainsaw:

Few months later, had another storm and had to fell the branch and we also took down another tree:

Setup a nice stack and splitting area:

Built and filled up my firewood shed:

Some more splitting to do before winter, but I hope to tackle that this weekend.

Loving all the photos and wishing I had a stove.

Stihl dealerships all around me. There's at least 4 within 3.5 miles of me. I am happy with my choice.

I figured. I was just stirring the 'Husky vs Stihl' pot. It's the 'Ford/Chevy' debate of the woodcutting world.

Willow burns about like pine. Great for a campfire, not so great for heating anything.

We all run Husky around here because for the same damn saw they're 25% cheaper.

    I figured.

The tree is sick or dying. The ends of the main branches are like air; "sponge-y" is the word I use. They make a great kindling/starter with minimal effort. Can usually get a fire going pretty damn fast.

My buddy bought an Echo for the second downed branch. He was having issues after it jammed up about an hour into that day. Stihl is a beast.

Was wondering if anyone might know what the other, purple center wood is. That was a tree on the property we took down completely.

Both of my saws are Orange, but I've never heard anything bad about Stihl besides the price.

My Stihl and my buddy's echo from the second downed limb and tree removal day:

BTW, that stump is from the echo buddy's job. If you know of a drinking game you can play with a stump, some nails and a hammer, we can be friends.

    +1 for Stihl.

I've had my 029 Farm Boss for 20 years. Always fires when I pull the cord.

Starting to get my fire wood. Picked up about a cord and a half from my parents.

Used a trailer my Dad pulled with his Chevy and I put some in my truck. Tacoma did alright besides the fact it was barely off the bump stops.

A couple of piles I have to move to my back yard where my temporary wood pile will be for this season.

All this wood is from a tree that fell last year.

Trying to make up for lost time before winter really kicks in. Loaded up my F250 cab high with mostly lengths.
    IMG_20191014_100915833_HDR.jpg

Then immediately bucked and sorted everything. A couple of the lengths were big enough I had to stir the sleeping giant (Stihl 044, 32" bar) from it's slumber.
