I haven't recommended anything specific to them, just pointed out that a modern stove would be more efficient. I think the original Defiants were in the somewhere in the 50-60% range. If they were to replace it, they'd need something that was capable of handling their 2000-ish square feet, so a fairly large stove still. So they'd probably be looking at $2000+ pretty easily.

We had our first fire of the season a few days ago.
I started the fire with an ember from a bow drill setup. "I made fire!"
Cherry bow with paracord (Inner cord removed), hemlock bearing block, and poplar spindle and hearthboard.

I cleaned and painted the stove last Saturday, and started a small fire to burn it in. I don't have the patience to use a bow drill. I want instant fire lol. Last night it took forever for it to catch, I think my fire skills are rusty and I need to make some better kindling.

Making the ember is really not that hard. Getting the ember to flame is the tricky part.
I just learned the bow drill this summer. All wood to make the kit was taken from our property.

Hey all. I just bought my first house, and it has a wood burning fireplace. I have a reclaimed wood flag that I think would look good over the fireplace. I put the flag on the mantle yesterday, and I like it.

    20191026_104535.jpg

I do have a question though. If you look on either side of the flag, you'll see a couple of verticle slits in the brick. There are 4 per side, so half of them are behind the flag. I looked in the slits with a flashlight, and it is hollow behind them. Are those slits heat vents or some mechanism to help the chimney exhaust properly? If I leave the flag on the mantle, will it cause any issues, or should I mount it higher to clear the slits?

A setup like that is usually for additional heat circulation via convection; typically there's a matching set of slits or a vent lower down on either the front or the side of the fireplace brickwork as an intake. The cool air from the floor is drawn in, warmed by the fire, and exits out through the top vents. Fireplaces are notoriously inefficient (with a few exceptions) and are typically more for ambiance than for heat, but those vents do help out a little bit. If you have a fire in it (after you've first had the flue checked to make sure it's safe to use) you should feel warm air coming out of those vents once the brickwork heats up.

Thanks for the reply. I kept Googling and found info stating the same yesterday or the day before. I have matching slits on the sides of the hearth. I had a company come out to clean the chimney as a requirement of my HOI, but they didn't leave any kind of invoice or report. I've tried calling them with no return calls.

I paid by check. I've gone through the CC dispute process before with some work done on my truck, and it's not worth the hassle for $100. I had the cleaning done before I closed, so I wasn't present. I know the cleaning was done because it's clean unlike when I looked at the property.

I doubt I'll burn this season, since I have no wood or any of the other accessories (wood grate, screen, tools).

Not sure that this has been covered.

We use a few Vornado brand fans to circulate the air from the wood stove throughout the cabin. They work awesome.

And they honor the warranty. We have 3 that have exceeded the 5 year warranty period. Twice we had slow fans. They replaced the fan each time no questions asked. I will buy from them again. Oh, we use fans summer and winter. We do not have central air. :)

No HOA here. My homeowners insurance required that I get it cleaned. I told my insurance agent that I got it cleaned, but they didn't leave any invoice or inspection report. He referred the company to me, so I'm not sure if he called them to double check or just went with good enough at my word. Either way, he didn't say anything about needing to get anything to prove it was done.

Not anything worthy of a good burn, but still impressive to watch the pros at work. I can handle a tricky drop myself, but climbing? Forget it.

Eastern White Pine. We had two big ones (one with a split top) right by the camp we'd just bought this summer and they needed to go. There's more across the road, also by power lines, that they're working on today.

The rest of the trees in the background aren't on our property, so we can't do anything with those. We tried to get the neighbors in on a 'group rate' cut with the Arborist, but they weren't interested. So...we cross our fingers that the remaining trees don't become our problem at some point.
