Aha, I thought that the hearth looked different than what you'd shown before.

Edit: just cleaned it with a wet paper towel, surprised how easily it came clean

Peter, I almost forget my T6 has the swinging grates for the top. I took them off to make room for 2 Ecofans and a pot of water. Makes for more room to move around the stove. Fires up in October, shuts down in April (or when the wood runs out).

    A thing or two...
I took down 4 smaller trees for my parents yesterday. Today, dad and I stacked and split most of it. Just a few knotty pieces left that need to dry out to split easier. The entire front layer is from this cutting.

Nice. If it ever gets really bad, glass cook top cleaner works great at removing the difficult baked on creosote on the glass and also leaves a protective coating making future cleanings even easier. If it ever becomes really bad you can also use 000 or 0000 steel wool pads :)

That's all I use, wet paper towel dipped in some of the ash from the stove. Another wet one to rinse, and a dry one to shine it up. Neighbor bought some kind of crazy expensive bottle of stuff and keeps telling me I'm damaging my glass. But nah.

There's 2 types of Ecofans...direct wood heat, and for cooler tops like a gas fireplace I think.

I've replaced the motors in both of mine, I thought the power module was the problem, the the motors do wear out. Only about $20cdn for a new one. I wish I hadn't thrown out a couple of older ones!

    Christmas came a little early!
My wife and FiL decided it was time to get me a log splitter.
So my wife bought it on cyber Monday and FiL went to pick it up and bring it over.
25 ton County Line, just hoping this rain slows up a little bit so I can go play with it this afternoon!49600.jpg
Don't misunderstand though, I will still be getting my workouts and keeping the axe flying! I just get tired of using the wedge on the knotty stuff.
And bonus- my FiL loves watching the wood splinter as the splitter hits it so he always wants to go and split, even if I can't.

I have the same model.
I hand-split for years, but last year (summer of '19) I had just too much going on and opted to buy a splitter over renting one. It's not really much faster on the straight-grained stuff, but god does it make a difference with the twisty/knotty pieces. I've yet to find a piece that it can't split, but I do wish that the 'debris drains' at end were bigger. I have to stop every so often and dig bark/strings out of them.

Exactly, it was such a hassle to try and coordinate borrowing/ picking up & dropping off from my inlaws neighbor.

Edit- I aslo caved and bought the Fiskars 10lb splitting maul in the spring. What a game changer that was for anything that was twisty.

I'm used to grubs falling out of logs I'm splitting, but this sucker is halfway to being a Graboid.

I've been stacking split hardwood for decades and never had a rot problem.
Really sucks finding 3 cords of DUST from paying to have it stacked.

That's a nice juvinile grub. I find them bigger around than my thumb and as long. Sometimes frozen like marbles when winter splitting. They must develop some kind of antifreeze in their cells for overwintering. Crows and ravens love them...Flicker woodpeckers too. They will excavate a lot to get at them.

My chickens like them too. They always hang out whenever I'm splitting and pick over the splits & discarded bark.

When I'm splitting outside of winter, the lizards have tuned into hanging out nearby for exposed termites and grubs. I left this sucker out and it disappeared. I'm assuming a California Thrasher had it for lunch.

On Martha's Vineyard(30 yrs). Heated with a woodstove for over 15 yrs, no back up. Never paid for wood, with all the nor-easters & hurricane's, always enough around(town would cut in 4' lenghts & leave on the side of the road). Had a underground powerline problem, on top of those. I had a LP Gastove for cooking on no power. But did have a nice old cast iron pot, I cooked like pot roast all day on the woodstove with.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
On "Martha's Vineyard" wow -- I would say you saved a considerable amount by getting your wood for free!
I would not even venture a guess what firewood delivered in that location would cost!
