I'm cheap, made one out of a scoop shovel handle and a long deck screw. Lightweight, right length, handy when bucking, splitting, stacking, etc. Easier on the old back, for sure.

    A thing or two...
I had a ton of trees taken down recently and asked them to leave me the hardwood. They left the 4 oaks, and I started bucking it to length.

    Pile left to cut:
    20210717_180403.jpg

    The big rounds cut today:
    20210717_180334.jpg

The little stuff (back pile cut yesterday evening and front cut today):
    20210717_180349.jpg

I'm going to need to pick up a splitting are to breakdown the rounds from the trunks. I bought some 2x4s for bracing for some fence posts that need replacing, so I'll use them to build some off-ground, outside firewood storage.

Does anyone here ever burn cottonwood? I've heard it isn't all that great but I just have so much of it. Wondering if I should waste my time splitting it or not.

I think cottonwood is in the same family as sycamore. Given the choice AND I have other choices, I would not fool with it . Now if thats all I had -then i would use it
Here is a quick chart from Arkansas that lists cottonwood -- not the greatest as you will see. there are hundreds of these charts out there and you probably find one more to your local area. Just google "firewood BTU chart) and you will find many. many list "ease of splitting" as well - BTW notice cottonwood splits easy -that is needed as around here the sycamores are also called "goformore" trees!

Cottonwood carves nicely. Inner bark makes nice tinder bundle for fire.
Locals carve the thick outer bark.
I save Cottonwood for the outdoor fire pit with the tulip poplar.

I use what I have. At the moment I have several sycamore leaners. A 110' fell last spring during a blow. They're usually nice and straight, not much to trim off, already seasoned, spilts up nice and easy, don't need to transport it, perfect for my needs. I don't heat with wood, but wife likes the fire, makes her arthritus feel better. I'm all for that.

Had a mixed load delivered today. I've now got wood for years, and work for months.

Sycamore, pine, a bit of cypress, and then I'm not entirely sure what the dark red stuff with the tight bark is, possibly pepper tree.

They both have their uses, but yes, the 044 is a heck of a machine. Overall volume, though, I've bucked up more wood with the Husqvarna.

Make sure you let that pine dry out completely, or you will be dealing with a buttload of creosote. I notice it says you live in a desert area -so the drying will be quicker. Couple of years ago I got a pine log delivered to me for free (I would have not brought it home myself) with a bunch of oak. I let that pine dry out a year after splitting it into kindling sized pieces (I have a hydraulic splitter) for starting fires. It still had enough sap/moisture in it so that I could light the stuff with one flick of the lighter stick. This part was great, although when cleaning the flue later that year, I had waaay more creosote build up than I normally have. The stuff was handy for starting the fire but not sure if it was worth filling up on creosote?

Yeah, I've burned some dried but sap-heavy pine before. Burns super hot and smokey. I try not to burn big pieces.

I live in the mid-Atlantic region. I'll only use pine in little sticks as fire starters. No way does a pine log go in my woodstove.

Had the first fire of the season last night. Actually the first fire ever in the new wood stove. I thought everything was going fine until the fire alarms kept going off. I didn't realize that this is common with brand new stoves as they need to bake in the fresh paint and burn off some of the fresh chemicals. Hopefully tonight will be a little better although I have a feeling it might take a few burns to get past this stage.

I burn madrone , fir , pine , spruce , cedar , big leaf maple or anything else I end up with , it all gives off heat , creosote build up has never really been an issue for me but our masonry chimney is all inside the conditioned space of the house except the last 7-8' so it stays warm

Neighbor down the road burns cottonwood sometimes, never heard him complain about it. I've heard the same about sycamore, but we burned about a cord last year, no complaints. Have to burn what's available on my land. Can't buy sight unseen, mostly junk. May try fuel blocks this season, hearing good things from die-hard wood burning old timers.

14-Oct-2021 update - Cool morning yesterday, tried the fuel blocks in our fireplace. Worked really well. I added one block for a total of five. Five or six is about right for our 42" fireplace, IMO. Made a nice manageable non-popping hot fire, added one block as needed to maintain, maybe 8-10 all day.
I used a propane torch to start it, but paper and a match works. I'll use a small handful of kindling from now on, only because I have lots.

With a wood fire, we had to use a tightly woven secondary screen to keep popping embers from getting through, which also blocked the heat. We now get the full benefit of the fireplace, and since it can heat the house, it's a backup heat source if needed. I'll keep a stockpile of blocks on hand. Peace of mind, out here in the boonies.
