Peter, I have a T6. It's in the basement, so has not the greatest draft, but does at least 95% of my heating (1100sqft, 2 levels). The basement stairway has a rolling door to shut and keep the upstairs from getting too hot, or to keep the ac air upstairs in summer. Small fires in the shoulder seasons with the door balancing things. Down to -10C there's a fan that blows through old duct work from in front of the stove to the great room ceiling. That will keep the house temperature at 20C or so. Lower than -10 and I augment with the heat pump.

The "back side" of the house is always warmer than the great room. When building we should have left the doorway through the middle wall open to the ceiling, but didn't. Warm air would pass right through to the gr. I investigated cutting that upper wall out, but there's wire for the ceiling fan in the void. There won't be one, but boy, would I have lots of better ideas for another house build. Viceroy had the right price in 1983. $40 per sq foot to finished if done by self, $45/sqft if turnkey by the general contractor. Those were the days. I wonder how anyone made a living building in those days.:canada:

PS I love seeing your builds as they develop.

Do you still love it? Comparing this to a Jotul Greenlake. I like the cook surface the T5 though.

Nice hybrid freestanding/insert cast iron/soapstone stove. Holds heat for hours. I use a mini box fan to push air to back of house.

The rheostat snapped on my unit. After further inspection, the shaft is plastic. Junk! I’m sure the new will be the same unfortunately.

Got started this weekend making Winter 2022-2023 garage heat. Had 3 trees dropped by pros due to proximity to the house. Got started this weekend reducing them to manageable sizes. Probably won't split them until next Summer. It's Ash.

So far the 20" Echo has been enough. I'll roll the big one with the tractor and finish cutting through.

I have a 24" Poulan I can resort to, but it's heavy. Use only as needed.

We had 5 ash trees taken down last winter. Damned emerald ash borer killed them all. Just starting to burn them now. It's good firewood.

You'll laugh but I cut stuff like that with a 16" Stihl. Cut, roll, cut.

    @2Toyotas is correct.
I fill a cup with water, dip a folded paper towel in then dip that in the ash. Rub the glass, let it dry then wipe with a dry paper towel, it cleans the glass perfectly.

It was only 6 degrees out this morning, so I stuffed her full of wood.

Then I went out to the garage and built a fire:

That looks like a fancier version of an old pot-belly stove I had in my garage. Mine was cute as heck, but it went thru wood like "shit thru a goose" I had bought it at an (a 95F day) auction for $5.00. Used it for a season or two then I sold it to a collector for $275.00. I found a small "timberline" stove for $50.00 and have been happier ever since. Be careful with that old stove, sometimes they get very loose in screws that hold them together. Be safe with it!

Thanks for the concern, but I have a lot of experience burning wood stoves. This stove has no screws. It is solid cast and the weight holds the overlapping sections together. It was made in my hometown (Evansville Indiana) around 1920-1930. It weighs around 200lbs and is about 3/8-1/2" thick.

I have triple walled pipe all the way up beyond the damper. With the draft +90% closed, it can be pretty efficient on wood. The stove reaches around 600F exterior temp. I can get my 40' x 50' garage up to 60F on 20 degree days in roughly 1-2 hours. If I am in a hurry, I have a 70,000 btu kero/diesel heater I can use to get that first 10 degrees or so.

I see Google picked up my comment, so because this is an old stove and others may be interested, I am posting another pic here:

For sure there was quality of build differences, back then -- great that you got a good one.

Yeah, believe it or not the previous owner left that in the garage. They even had a garage sale before they moved and nobody bought it.

I think maybe the weight scared buyers. Had the looked closely, it comes apart into four pieces, which are manageable.

The fact that it was made locally, and so long ago, makes it even more unbelievable nobody grabbed it. I am really glad they left it.

Have you given any thought to sprucing it up a bit? I painted mine with flat black Hi temp paint, and it made it stand out and be noticed. It had that effect on mine - didn't do anything for the efficiency of the old dude, but it looked a lot better. Yours may have had parts on it that were chromed, but having that done can get expensive.
