It seems like we had to take down a tree perennially on our one acre in Texas and I used the smaller stuff for kindling. Plenty of detritus laying around our new home to do the fire starting if need be. I have a fire starter for emergencies but it's been around for more than a decade now...

99% of the time I use kindling but I keep firestarters around if I am in a rush and cant tend the stove. I barely use them though

All winter I just need to open it more and add wood.
Fall and spring I sometimes have fun and start it with flint, steel, and charcloth with a tinder bundle or add the charcloth to the charcoal left over. A Pocket Bellows gets the ember to expand enough to have a good bed of hot coals.
Opening the inlet gets it going HOT.

    Fun stuff.

Upside down fire. Big-ish splits on the floor of the stove, little bit bigger split next layer across first, kindling next, cardboard and paper on top. LIght it and away it goes. come back in 15 minutes and your fire is going nicely. Not constantly feeding little bit bigger pieces and maybe smothering things. Has worked for me for a long time

I use fatwood. Stuff works great!
(Was going to link Amazon but holy smokes… I do not pay that!)

It’s a natural fire starter. Plus I use newspaper, cardboard, mail, kids homework… whatever is flammable!

Also use Fatwood often. Super nice to use when I don’t want to search for sticks or scraps.

When we lived in Oakhurst near Yosemite there was an endless supply of fat wood just hanging out in the forest. That was long ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth and before Amazon was conceived. I would split huge bundles of it to keep on hand or give away. I guess I could have been rich looking at those prices. Oh well…day late…dollar short

This is my method too. It's great to just light it and forget about it. Makes mornings go smoother.

I use newspaper or packing paper as a bed, egg carton or similar pressed paper if I have it, thin dry pieces (pallet or similar) small log shards or bark and 1 or 2 small logs on top. I light the paper and open doors to draw for draft and wait 10-15 for white ash or embers and put on a full log.

I shouldn't be either...retired. But when you do it from October to mid May, that's a lot of fires. Most of the winter it's just an add to coals situation, the shoulder seasons get re-starts daily.

    Garage wood stove.

I got an additional rack made last week and two loads of wood processed this weekend. Every year in October I say "next year I am getting this done early". This year I am walking the talk!

I am going to drop two wild cherry trees and they will complete my Winter supply for 2023-24.

Yeah, except it's been busted by some carpenter ants, that's why I chose this particular tree. They would have killed it in a few years anyway. There were hundreds inside the lower trunk section.

    20230725_154630.jpg

Found this in my woods today. Thought the firewood folks might enjoy. This has come up several times now at the base of a very large, old Oak tree.
Cell case for scale, but roughly 16 inches across.
