Someone in our neighborhood FB group posted that these only grow by Oak trees and she was using them for something. Dunno what.

Yeah, I read up on it. She's right. There is a relationship between the roots of the tree and the mushroom. Articles say they will typically come back each year in the same spot. It's basically a root fungus growing up through to the ground surface to get nutrients from which both the fungus and the tree get some benefit.

Jealous! I bet we still have at least a month before I'll be able to get one going. My rule of thumb is the highs outside have to be under 50F to have a fire. We're just starting to see high 40's at night but daytime highs are still in the 70's.

I resemble that remark, house wood bin is full 4 cords ready for next year and working on four for the next winter today!

Fell two more trees for a friend the other day. For my efforts 2 more cords of dry cedar. It’s still in the high 70’s here…but I will be ready when things begin getting colder.

Just cut up and stacked the oak tree I had to cut down last month:

    IMG_2743.jpg

But we had both fireplaces gutted, and are probably putting in an electric thingy instead. My sister said she needed the firewood, but it looked like they’re moving to pellets.

I can’t imagine it’ll be too hard to find someone who needs a half cord of oak.

Looks like some carpenter ant housing in some rounds. Might not be the best place to store it. HOpe it goes soon. I'm still waiting to get into the woods for next year's wood.

If I find ants I do one of 2 things.
Diatomaceous Earth spread in the area. It tears them up crawling over it.
A mix of sugar and borax powdered or mixed with water. They take it to the nest and poison the food supply.

So I am in the market for a liner for my stove. Smooth wall or corrugated? Is smooth really necessary? Do I need to insulate the liner?

We did our first burn of the year last night! I forgot how nice that heat feels. It wasn't all that cool out (high 40's) so I kept the screen door open but man it was nice.

We have a soapstone stove which has to be tempered at the beginning of the season to wick all the moisture out of the stone so it doesn’t crack during high heat burns. Three small fires using some cedar and maple to bring it up to temp and then fully cool down. We are now ready for Fall and Winter. The 12” of new blown insulation (total 16”) in the attic is already a game changer. Stove held the house at temp all night and into the morning just off the small fires. Might reduce my cordage this year…we will see

Taking the top of mine off and redoing the seal cut my use from 4 to 3 cords. That was year before last.

The utility companies have finally gotten serious about clearing the areas around the lines. The destruction from the emerald ash borer means there is quite a lot for them to do. I just took a walk down the road and saw a full season's worth of wood there just for the taking. And they aren't finished! At least two more trees will come down, one of them quite large. I sense a Mighty Ox rental in my future...

I spent this week skidding out my next year wood. 90% dead ash. PMOFF. It used to be mix in some ash with the oak hickory and maple, now its mix in the odd oak, hickory or maple. And unless you're looking it's not obvious how much ash there is in the woods, until they're dead.

Can i connect my flexible liner directly to a stove tee or do I have to use the adaptor?
