And this is what I’ve done so far

    IMG_0596.jpg
    IMG_0594.jpg

Got logs on both sides of dunnage cut off and I’m ready to use my floor jack work on the bottom few logs and ease the pile down. I’ll use the the jack handle while on outside of dunnage to stay clear of the taller part of the pile

    IMG_0614.jpg

And I got this to help

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Besides that nice new saw -you need a nice new/used gas powered splitter. Suggestions: find a friend or pal who also cuts and uses firewood and go in together on a new/used splitter. I did this (bought a used one at auction -20 years ago), with my brother and a neighborhood friend, and it was one of the best decions I have ever made -especially at my (now) age (75) I store the splitter when not in use -Outside in it's "garage" -an old used galvanized wastub. It gets rained/snowed/and baked by the sun and still runs great -with regular service (oil changes etc.). We did have to replace the engine once, but the "new" (14 Y/O) engine (Briggs) never fails to start on the first or second pull, even after setting for 3-4 months.
If you don't want to buy -at least rent/borrow one -your back will thank you!

I do have a splitter. A champion 27 Ton . So far it’s doing an adequate job. But thanks for the suggestion

Yeh when I worked for a tree service we had no choice but to use a maul on rounds to get them off the property. They didn't have any fancy equipment. to load the rounds. Ma and Pa operation.

Oh man, what an awesome thread! Wife and I try to heat mostly with the wood-burning insert. We've made a bit of a hobby of going up to the mountains, walking the dog, and coming back with a bed full of beetle kill pine. We recently found a stretch of forest that burned in a huge fire from a couple years ago. It didn't burn too hot in that stretch, so the wood there is nicely seasoned/dried. The forest service has been cleaning up the beetle kill and burn zones, so there's plenty of logs already cut to fit in the bed. We're not sure if we need a permit to gather those (the wifey is convinced that we don't), but we're careful to only to the forest roads that are far from the "arterial" forest roads. We were kinda disappointed that the government shut-down didn't happen, because we wanted to hit the more visible sites during what we call "Free Firewood Days at the National Forest."

Wifey runs the chain saw, I split with a maul. I'm 52, and my back has some problems, but it's going ok. I call it good exercise. Wifey, however, is worried about my back and has been poking around for a used splitter. Probably not the best time right now to get a good deal.... We're a little behind at the moment, but we think maybe 4 more bed-loads and we'll be good for winter. However, we have about 1.5 cords to cut and split left to go. I'd say we burn about 3 cords in the winter, but wifey would probably say 2.

I was chatting with a Canadian friend online. He was really interested in getting some blue pine (pine beetle stained wood), and I was all jealous of the maple he has all around him. We came THIS close to meeting in the middle to trade.

    Cheers!
