It’s a typical fall day. A little bit of rain, a little bit of sun, calls for a little bit of warmth IMG_1700.jpg

Gotta love stacking wood in the dark cause of daylight savings. Only my second year but its already going alot better with the dryer wood I have.

Anyone have an idea on how many loads in my truck would it take to equal a cord of firewood? Each load would be just a little over the bed rails of my short bed. I might sell some of what I have.

Last pic is what I had before I began today’s work . I think I can afford to sell a cord

A cord measures 4x4x8 or 128 cu ft. Average load in short bed for 3” above bed rails would be approximately 4x4x2 (actual bed dimension for short bed are 19.5” deep x 44.75” wide x 52.75” long) or 32 cubic feet. So 4 loads would equal 1 cord.

My wife and I have had our woodstove going since mid-October and have yet to burn a "real" piece of split firewood , I'm still using up my carpenter's collection of framing lumber scraps , I had about a cord stored when we started and we have probably a 1/4 cord left plus I generate more daily haha

That's a great idea. I traced the space onto corrugated cardboard and had a metal dude cut the shape out of steel sheet (don't recall the gauge). Then, I had it powder coated. Attachment difficulties, and warping from the heat, have made that effort a failure. Also, my wife picked out the color, and I hate it. It wasn't crazy expensive, so I'm not too salty about it.

Hardie backer seems like a fantastic idea, especially since it says it's paintable. I might try cutting it and painting it myself with some high-heat paint. I suspect the automotive paint products made for inside the engine bay would work just fine.

My wife also found a thread (at Hearth.com maybe?) where someone bent sheet metal to fit in the spaces so that the bends were not quite 90 degrees, so the pieces would basically be friction fit. Given warping, though, I'm not confident in that design. Sheet metal warps like mad next to that much heat.

You've given me some great ideas! Thanks much!

Yeh I heard about the Hardie Backer from that forum. But mine isn' seen at all so I don't need to paint it. I really don't need to do it but my stove is outset so the heat I don't want to go up the chimney and it's extra heat for my fan to push into the room. But I have the old damper the previous house owner kept so I can use that to trace to cut the backer and just gonna do it in two pieces with a cutout for the liner tube. Should make it a breeze to install. But after further research the Hardie board isn't flammable or combustable so looks like a good option. But the gonna use the thicker version. I'll post my results when I get the time to do it.

I made a backing behind our stove. Plywood, burlap, and then clay. The final coating of clay colored it. I made a southwest sort of design.
The point is, clay is not flammable.
