So 12000 gallons / 4000 square feet means that each square foot of roof accounted for at least 3 gallons of water. At .62 gallons per inch of rain per foot of roof that means that you guys got something like 6 inches of rain out of that storm.

    Holy Crap!

Well, I was rounding in my head. If you crunch exact #'s it works out to 4.83 inches, but you said the cistern was overflowing and had been for some time, and the roof was around 4000, so I rounded the gallons of water per inch per foot down to .5 gallons to simplify the math.

12000 gallons divided by 4000 square feet = 3 gallons per foot.
1/2 gallon per inch per foot times 3 gallons works out to 6 inches.

Maybe there was more than 1000 gallons left in the cistern?

A one-inch rain will collect 600 gallons from a 1,000 square foot roof, while 4,500 square foot lot will receive 2,800 gallons!

    http://cals.arizona.edu/cochise/waterwise/waterharvest.html

Interesting , seems like you are at least in the ballpark

My size of the roof area could be a bit low and there may have been a bit more water in the tank than I thought , but still , wow

yeah, I know that a solid overnight rainstorm will fill both of the 330 gallon tanks I use to water the garden with. I've got gutters on the house for collection, but the roof is only covering around 1100 square feet. But still...

With that kind of rainfall the PNW must have soil made of Shamwows.

Yeah, the Willamette Valley's got some of the best farmland in the world.

Edit: Not to mention a fairly mild climate that doesn't need much wood-burning (to get us back on topic) during the winter.

I'm going today to get a half ton of pellets. Hopefully that'll be it for this winter:rolleyes: Total would be almost 3.5 tons for the winter. That would be the most I've had to burn in a season since I started heating with pellets.
Extremely happy I didn't get caught having to buy LP at $6.00/gal. to heat my home:eek:

I thought LP was expensive where I just moved to, $4/gal. At the right place on the west side of WA, $2.25/gal.

    Howdy OZ.
    Nice to see you.

    I have an odd request for you;
Can you give me a rough idea of what a block of Madrone weighs when it's green? I'm looking for a cube or two in the 6"-ish range. I'm considering trying to get my hands on some to have a go at turning it on my lathe, and I want to know if it'd be worth the shipping charges to get some here from the West coast.

Everything I can find on Ebay is the 1" pen blanks, and they don't tell me how much they weigh.

    Thanks!

Pacific madrone weighs about 60 lb/ft3 when green and 45 lb/ft3 at 12 percent MC. The average specific gravity is 0.58 for green volume and 0.69 for ovendry.

    from:
    http://owic.oregonstate.edu/pacific-madrone-arbutus-menziesii

So thats 60 pounds for 1,728 cubic inches.
If my math is correct, then 6x6x6 inch cube would be in the 7.5 pound neighborhood. But I've read that newly cut green wood can be 20 to 30% moisture and this figure is based off 12%.

Buying green madrone might be a mistake , that shit dries crazy and tends to change shape , however , having said that a local bowl turner uses madrone and cuts his blanks green but then he stabilizes them somehow and I think he stores them for quite some time before turning his bowls

He got a bunch of bowl blanks from a job I was doing where we had to take down a couple madrone trees and he gave me a beautiful approx 20" salad bowl

Those were about the same #'s I was coming up with, but like you said, moisture can vary. I was hoping for some real-world numbers from our resident Madrone expert.

yeah, you have to cut the blanks and rough out the pattern while it's still green. Then the best way to stabilize it is to boil it for a few hours, let it cool down in the water, and then air dry it for anywhere from a couple of months to a year. I do the same thing with Applewood when I turn that. Otherwise it does tend to warp and crack/split.

I tried to have it rebuilt but it turned out the steel in the back was buckled from excessive heat. Local dealer even located the original builder but he's not doing that extensive of metal work any more.

We're gonna replace it with a Jotul F600.

That's too bad. There's nobody around that could custom fab some new steel for you? Or would it have been too pricey for a stove that old?

You'll like the Jotul, at any rate. My uncle has one heating his house right now. Jotul only rates it for 2500 square feet, but his house has got to be close to 3000 and it's always comfortable in the winter. The open concept helps, but still...
