    Black walnut is a hard wood it burns fine but it does dry slow when I burned the tops and limbs it usually was 2 years cut. Good bit of land I own here in Maine is on the Saco River so what I lack in walnut I gain in swamp maple it really likes to be under water in the spring. Hoping to get some quarter sawn before winter.

    People look at pine as poor fire wood but if they did some research they would find that there is a great deal of heat energy in it. Its only problem it's a go for wood you need a lot of it. It really works well in a gasification boiler.

    Yeah, lots of heat when it's seasoned right, but you've practically got to stand there in front of the stove with the door open and shovel it in.
    We use pine in our Maple Syrup evaporator in my parent's sugarhouse, and it works great for that.

    I suspect I am spoiled with the species I have readily available. Or perhaps different varieties grow out east (I am in the mid-mississippi valley). All of my wood gets seasoned for at least one full year CSS. The walnut seems to dry quicker than most species in my opinion. Even excluding the exceptional species like oak and hedge I would still rank black walnut behind the likes of red elm, mullberry, wild cherry and about the same as hackberry as far as heat output. I agree with black walnut producing relatively few coals. If I remember correctly I have seen black walnut ranked around 20 MBTU/cord

    Tim, click the link in Oz's quote. It has a comparison chart to show BTU/cord of various kinds of wood, including oak, and according to it, oak is not the highest BTU/cord.

    Oz, you may be wrong on that count. This internet thing never lies.

    Check out this BTU/cord comparison of various wood types.

    Calls out madrone at 30.1 million and Orange Osage at 32.9 million. It also calls out live oak at 36.6.
