Nice place. My family is in Washington cty VA. I was wanting to buy an old mill on the river when I was up there but owner wont sell. Cousin told me a lot of people would rather see a place rot and fall down before they sell.

Yes you are correct that is a harvester I have a tendency to call anything like that a feller/buncher sorry. It is one amazing machine and pictures do not do it justice without actually seeing it work.

Absolutely no material better than soapstone for a stove!

Functional works of art with the veining.

Iron and steel is cheap, but is really the most energy inefficient material for a stove.

My great grandmom had a copper stove was dated like 1820 or so.
It got sold for ~$150 bucks in the late '60's by a shiftless cousin.
Be worth a small fortune now.

:goingcrazy: B&C Oil on your woodstove!! :goingcrazy:

I've got the Mansfield. I picked it up for $500 in Craigslist shortly after we bought the house. It had been in some lady's cellar for years, unused, and all of the cast iron was covered in surface rust. Took it apart, buzzed the rust off with a wire wheel, stove blacked the metal surfaces, then put it back together, resealing and regasketing as I went. Total investment was probably around $550, after I bought the new gaskets, the stove cement, and the stoveblack.

I love the soapstone. Nice even heat. It's deceptive, because you open the door to feed it and it's like a blast furnace.
Edit: during the off season (argh! Dirty glass! :anonymous:)

Another vote for soapstone. Actually, I haven't installed my stove yet as it just arrived last week, but from my research soapstone is the way to go. Attached is the stove I just picked up from Woodstock Soapstone Co., hand built in New Hampshire.

I love the look of their new Progress Hybrid. Want.

I'm assuming the Alderlea has the reburn tubes for secondary combustion? I saw that it had "air injection" but didn't find a picture of the firebox to see what the system consisted of.

My dad picked up the Progress Hybrid when I ordered the Fireview. We haven't unpacked them yet, but the PH is a beast....the crates around 750 lbs. The company is fantastic to deal with.

That's an interesting design; my Hearthstone has the multiple perforated tube setup for secondary combusition. I haven't seen a plate system like that before.

    Hate him.
Unless he lives within convenient robbing distance :spy:

Found this in my archives from last season. The neat fire show during the secondary burn makes me wish that the stove was upstairs instead of in the cellar. However, the prodigious heat output makes me glad it's not in my main living space, haha!

Lol. No speakers at work, so no sound FTW! :D

It's neat watching the gases combust like that. With mine if you look at the top of the firebox during a burn it looks just like a propane burner on a grill; 3 inch fingers of flame shooting out from the vent holes.

One of the last loads of the season, probably.

    Maybe.

Unless I spot something that the linemen dropped and haven't come back for. :anonymous:
