Yeah actually I do burn some soft maple this time of year when temps are more mild. Mostly I cut up stuff that has fallen from storms. Ash is my mainstay however. It burns nice and is easy to split by hand.
Hedge is my favorite as far as BTU per pound, it's hard as hell.

Interesting link. I did some reading on a university website years ago and it talked about btu per pound. Essentially, it was indicated that most wood puts out 10,000 to 12,000 btu per pound. The difference is weight of wood per volume. A 10" x 24" stick of maple is gonna weigh half of a what a comparably sized log of oak or hedge.
The btu per cord is nice because its based on a set volume.
I cut a fair amount of hackberry as well and love it and it ranks well.

    neglect, mostly.
neato thread. sub'd. . . me and my dad "restored" an old wood stove an put it in my barn last year. it's super ghetto with all the fans we have blowing around and past it, but it works amazing. we just burn pallet boards which we get for free. probably 3,000 sq foot barn with zero insulation. it gets toasty. . will get a pick of it later when i go back home.

I love cutting wood. It doesn't matter how cold it is, you stay warm , your out in the timber and there ain't shit else to do around here when it's cold.
    Stihl FTW!

    Interesting

Not really. It talked about how in 1800s they were planted very crowded and pruned as such, but around here I've seen trunks 36 inches in diameter and 40 to 50 feet tall. Often times I see damaged specimens that will sprout multiple trunks and we cut a lot of decently straight fence and corner posts that way.
I would love to find 4 nice large chunks to use as verticals for a pergola in our future patio area.

Indeed. Male and female as well which always seems odd for vegetation.
