Wife and I joke that our Jack russell mix (dog in signature) would crawl into the fire of we let her. She gets close to the fire and stays there until she is panting, then gets up, turns, and roasts her other side

My cat would rub his chin on the front corner of the stove and usually singe the hair on the tip of his tail on the door glass , lol

    What a stink

    Thanks!
It's an Elmira Julia that I rescued from a falling down shed shortly after we bought our current house (Almost exactly two years ago! Where does the time go?!). I cleaned it up, put new firebrick, new gaskets, & stoveblacked it and it works like new. It's a discontinued model, since Elmira sold their cookstove division to Heartland years ago. Mine's a mid to late 70's unit, and it's essentially a Heartland Sweetheart and it shares most of the same parts. It heats our upstairs easily on a low to medium burn, and we cook breakfast on it most weekends during the winter.
Link to the modern unit with specs and owner/operator manuals:
    http://www.heartlandapp.com/products/woodburning-cookstoves/sweetheart-woodburning-cookstove.aspx

Mine likes to sleep under the stove, on the oven side, when it's running. He'll stay under there until he's panting so hard you'd think he'd faint, then he'll come out, empty his water bowl, and go back under. I think he must store the heat up, because the same cat will happily spend the night curled up on a rick of firewood when it's snowing and blowing outside.

We had an ice storm in 06 here just to the north of us there was enough ice to bring down high tension towers. The "morons" were our neighbors they had to craw on their hand and knees under the down power lines and trees to get out. There was no power to be had any where to pump gas and most people had no place to store enough gas to run generators long term. The lights were on at our house by chance I had filled my skid tank several days before there was any talk about a storm enough wood in Maine is never an issue. Our "moron" neighbors saw the beacon of light (well we actually invited them) they brought food we all cooked their kids had a bath the next night the adults took their turn cloths were washed we sat and talked and watched TV that my friend is what it is all about and the sooner the fringe people figure that out the better our country will become life is much better if you don't hide behind locked doors with a gun in your hand. The power was restored to the neighbors house in only 19 days.

Clearly he doesn't hate children if he's eating them.
I hate Lima beans, and I'll go hungry before I eat those.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Love the old cookstoves. Looks to be a fine unit. Glad to hear that you use it to cook also. Good job rescuing it!

I'm a sucker for them too. It's nice to have the backup cooking method, and when we had our Christmas ice storm last year we did all of our cooking/baking/roasting with it for our Christmas dinner. We didn't have power for about a week, and the hot water reservoir came in damn handy for bathing and doing dishes. Having that 5 gallon tank beats the hell out of heating water in pots all over the cooktop!

English compassion was not my strong point and my typing rates a poor second but in your command of the English language you still understood what I was trying say.

So I'm thinking about blurring the lines between pelletonianism and woodstoves and buying a pallet of those pressed firewood blocks from the local tractor supply. :anonymous:

I've got my usual 5 cord socked away this year, but after last winter I'm gunshy about running out. And right now cut/split/delivered in my area's selling for $250 a cord (for GREEN) and 'seasoned' (which I have my doubts about, typically) is over $350/cord. The local Tractor Supply's running a special on a pallet (2000lbs) of pressed blocks for $219, so I'm sorely tempted to get one and stick it in the back of the garden shed for 'just in case'

I haven't burned those as a cord wood replacement, but we had a few boxes that we used instead of kindling. They burn hot and are easy to light, that's for sure. I'm sure, like pellets, quality varies greatly between brands/batches. Some of what we had would tend to expand and break up while burning, causing them to burn much too quickly. I would be interested in hearing your experience if you do get them. They definitely have the convenience factor like pellets.

    Yep!
You can burn down a forest in most fireplaces and still freeze all winter.

I keep looking at some of the new anthracite coal hydronic systems.
    Partner it with some solar.
Hardest part would be keeping cool in the winter. :D

These are strange; they're not the small blocks like bio bricks; they're much larger and probably weigh 6-7 lbs apiece. I bought a pack the other day to see how they burn. They don't light as easily as the smaller ones do; seems like they do best on a bed of coals or with some smaller splits or some roundwood mixed in. But the three that I got burned well in the cookstove, threw great heat, and seems like each block burned for about 4-5 hours.
