For me it depends on if I've already been cutting and my gear is handy. If I've got one gnarly piece that I'm splitting, by the time I go to the garden shed and get the saw, sharpen it, gas it up, and put my gear on I could have already split the piece down to size with the wedges and sledge that I keep in the woodshed.
But if I've been cutting already that day and I've got everything handy then I'll fire the saw up and work it down that way instead.

For me it's just second nature to grab the saw when I grab the maul, and it's always sharp, fueled up, and ready to go.

I usually will cut up a bunch of wood (a couple of cords at a time) to stove length on the weekend, pile it up by the wood shed, and then I'll split & stack it after work during the week. So usually I don't have the saw handy when I'm splitting. If I'm running into a bunch of gnarly pieces I'll just toss them off to the side and take the saw to them later, but if it's just one piece it's just faster to stick a wedge in there and give it a whack or five with the sledge.

It's ridiculous the amount of unprocessed wood that leaves BC this way

"In 1997, for example, less than 200,000 cubic metres of B.C. timber was exported in raw form (one cubic metre roughly equals one city telephone pole). For the past three years, raw log shipments have exceeded 5.5 million cubic metres annually.

In just five years, from 2009 to 2013, annual raw log exports jumped from under 2.5 million to well over 6.5 million cubic metres.

To put that in perspective: a standard logging truck can hold around 40 cubic metres of timber. A standard single family home contains about 37 cubic metres of wood. So, in 2014 alone, B.C. exported enough wood to fill 147,250 logging trucks or build over 159,000 homes.

If lined up end to end, those trucks would stretch from Vancouver to Thunder Bay, Ontario. If inhabited by four people each, those homes would house more people than all of Vancouver."

Do they buy from US mills? I've looked on their site before and they take pride in the amount of lumber harvested in North America, but I never found anything on their site that mentioned where the lumber they buy was milled. Since they don't mention it anywhere, but take so much effort to advertise everything else they do with US suppliers I guessed it was China.

Never seen any dimensional framing lumber domestically thay was milled outside of Canada or the US . I have seen some plywood made in China though and lots of doors

When I find a completely impossible gnarly log that won't split with my maul, it becomes my new chopping block. In a couple of years of enough over-striking (or complete misses), it'll fall apart and I'll replace it with the newest gnarly log I come across.

For me it depends how desperate I am for wood but I've done my fair share of splitting gnarly rounds with a chainsaw

Cut split and stacked about another cord this morning. Time to hydrate and watch a western.

Split and stacked about 1/2 cord this morning before it started raining on me. Then I went into the garage and put a rusty old double-bit axehead into the bubbler and put a wire wheel on the angle grinder and started restoring the rusty old Hearthmate wood/coal stove that came with the house. Got all of the surface rust buzzed off and freed up the shaker mechanism, stripped all of the old gaskets out and chipped out the old cement. Tomorrow I'll stop at the hardware store and get some fresh gaskets and some stoveblack, and put it in Craigslist once I get those put on. Nice old heater, but I don't have any use for it.
After I got the stove done I took the axehead out of the bubbler and went to town on it with a wire brush and some fine-grit sandpaper. Wouldn't you know it, hidden underneath all of the rust and grime was a Snow & Nealley stamp, from right up the road in Bangor!

And it's an old model, too. From well before Snow & Nealley started importing their axeheads from China.

More firewood this afternoon. Around a cord and a touch more, because it took two trips with the Dodge fully-freighted to get it out of the woods.

Picked up a two cord permit today. Might go hunting for some oak tomorrow.

How do they determine how much wood you haul out?

Honor system. Each tag is good for 1/4 cord. They give a rough guide on how different types of trucks measure up based on bed height or cab height. In my experience, as long as you are making the attempt to use the permit and follow the rules, they don't get hung up on exact measurement.

That being said, if you are found cutting without a permit or failing to properly tag your load, you can get pretty stiff fines and lose the privilege of being able to buy permits in the future.

Honor system works pretty well most of the time, really. Guy I buy from sometimes uses the same system and everybody seems pretty honest about it.

Thanks. The reason I ask is that one of the guys we buy from used to stack his wood in 1/2 cords and now he is just piling it and charging by the truckload. I want to be sure we can agree on what that means.
