Today I learned a very important lesson while changing my gear oil in my 5 SPD there is no sense draining the oil if you can't take the filler plug off. I soon learned that the last toyota mechanic to service my truck totally striped the filler plug. I will now always take off the filler before the drain plug.

    Ouch.

The writeup on changing the trans fluid in the 2nd Gen 4.0 ("sealed" trans takes WS fluid) indicates to remove the filler first, then the level check plug, then the drain.

    Alternative....

If you can get a Fumoto drain plug in the proper thread, get the kind with a hose fitting.
You know the capacity of the box... pump exactly that much fluid in through the drain, then close the Fumoto valve before removing the hose.

No way to verify the level is correct, but it's better than not being able to service it at all.

My old man told me this the first, second, and 3rd time I changed diff fluids. Now I'll never forget. If no one tells you little tricks like this, you will soon learn them the hard way when working on stuff. It sucks when it requires welding or something and you don't have the equipment.

In a pinch, you could fill the rear diff from the breather hole. ;)
Might take a while, but do-able.

This is why i started doing all my own service...started noticing missing bolts striped bolts and stuff that had been "changed" but never actually did. I ended up spending 8 hours grinding drilling heating getting the rounded bolt from a 24mm to a 22mm. Not a happy day. Put amsoil severe duty 75w90. Considered royal purple 75w140 but seamed pretty expensive and heard great things about amsoil. Will test soon.

I did my front diff, and the drain plug stripped. The fill plug came out cleanly.

so, i just used the pump to suck it out, and re-filled it.

I'll worry about it in 40k miles...

Oh, good! I thought you meant they stripped the threads on the filler plug. Although it was a bitch and yes, justifiably pissed off, this was much better than the threads being stripped. Plus 2 on all the DIY due to dipshits not caring about other people's rides at dealerships and breaking clips, leaving bolts out and not tightenening the crank bolt and spraying cold water on a truck that had been sitting in their hot lot all day cracking the windshield and other such nonsense...........That was for drivetrain warranty issues or they'd have never seen it. I avoid dealership service like the plague it is. (sorry for the one in 10 million techs who do actually take pride in their work and honest about any mistakes, I wasn't talking about you)
