What are your planned uses for the platform? I have been thinking about making one that can be used for a sleeping platform, and plan on making it about level with the bed rails. I want to section it off underneath to make it easier to keep various item in place, and then put access doors through the platform. At work we use rubber/foam insulation and i want to use a layer of this for a mat on top as the stuff is very comfortable for sleeping on. For the access doors through the platform I want to use some nylon strap for pull tabs. Gas cans will be kept so opening the tailgate will provide access to them. Those are my thoughts and not sure if any will be helpful.

5' bed, 6' owner, so no sleeping in it for me.

I have various items that typically stay in the truck at all times. Folding toilet and folding wagon seen here are two of those items.

However, I also need it to come out easily, hence the idea of making it in halves that fold easily. The two halves could be strapped to the roof rack.

I think I'm also going to hinge the rear 20" or so such that they can be folded back to give me access to a portion of the bed that would be full height but also limited fore/aft for things like coolers that tend to roll around.

Why are you building a bed platform if you can't sleep back there ?

Bed meaning truck bed, not bed meaning sleeping bed.

Guess I have no suggestions then. All I can say is that partitions are good.

I think I'm going to try and find some bins that will fit in the space beneath the platform, rather than put dividers in.

One other thing I'm looking for is a way to latch the supports in the 90-degree orientation to the deck when they are installed but that I can unlatch when I need to fold them flat for removal and storage. If anyone knows of some hardware like this, or a woodworking trick to make it happen, that would help.

I built a platform for mine and I did away with any center supports. I used 2 - 2x6's for the cross supports and 3/4" plywood for the decking. I had 2 removable sections up front so I could get at anything that slid forward and the deck was split down the middle and hinged so I could fold it up if I needed the whole bed. I found 2 bins at Walmart that fit underneath for tools and jumper cables and used the top for everything else. It was strong enough to support almost 900 lbs of tile and grout, I could remove it easily and no center supports to deal with if I wanted to put something wide underneath. Unless you want the compartments, I would do away with them. They just limit the size of what you can store under the platform.
This was mine before I put the hinges in:

    Honeycomb composite sleeper platform.
As long as it is just you sleeping there a 6'2" person fits diagonally.

I don't think I can put cross-beams like that in mine since some of the things I want to put under there are >8" tall. Without checking, I think it's 8" from the top of the bed mat to the bottom of he notch.

I suppose I could take the mat out...

I'm wondering now if I couldn't just span across the entire thing with 1x12s and put rubber gasketing on the ends of them to hold them in place against the bed walls.

ETA: nevermind, there's not going to be a way to get them in/out.

The 1x12s would work but over time they will be uneven and could cup on you. Also, a decent bump would knock them out of place. I would think you'd want to tie them together somehow since, as a unit, it's less likely to move.
