Hey guys, I dont have much knowledge about autos/trucks and I might have done the wrong thing… I bought a brand new 22 Tacoma AC 2wd 4cyl automatic. I changed the tire and wheel from stock 245/75/16 to 265/70/17. Also I think the wheel and tire I got was around 25-30lbs (black rhino, Falken Wildpeak At3w) heavier than the stock. I can’t stop thinking about it…

Mpg went down 1-2 and I feel like the acceleration also went down. The timing on change of gear is kinda weird too I think. I know it’s because of the tires and wheels… Did I go up tire and wheel size too much? If I retain what I have right now, is it going to affect longevity of my 4cyl Tacoma? I’m thinking about going back to a smaller size but I want to hear what you guys think and your experience if you did the same thing. Thanks!

Thats the set up I plan on going with on my SR 4cyl but using the TRD Pro wheels. There is not a huge size difference between your stock set up and what you have now, unless you bought E rated tires your new tires and wheels should be close in weight to stock.
Seeing a slight dip in acceleration and MPG is normal but shouldn't be so bad that you'd want to switch back.

Anytime you add significant "unsprung" weight, you will feel the performance hit. There is nothing specifically wrong with the sizes you indicate, but tires and wheels can vary quite a bit in weight. A load range E tire will weigh considerably more than a load range C tire in most cases. You could get back close to where you were with lighter weight choices, even at the larger overall size.

black rhinos are heavy, I'd only consider them for the style and design.
if you're concerned about weight, SCS wheels are the most bang for your buck light weight wheels, some of them are even lighter than Enkei RPT1 by a few pounds

just a couple of things tbh
so going up to a larger and heavier tire and most likely a heavier wheel will cause performance and make it slugish but the 4cyl will be find my buddy had a 2010 tacoma running 35s and it was gutless af buuuut it ran fine with no issues. that same motor and trans is actually in a 85 toyota pickup now running i think 37s and its fine no issues

You're not going to do any damage to the motor, transmission should also be okay though it will be working a little bit harder, but your truck's going to be as it is unless you re-gear which is another 2 to 4 grand.

My son’s 2022 SR DCSB 2WD 2.7L came from Gulf States Toyota with the TSS package which included 265/65/17 tires. You will have no problems - just enjoy the improved looks of your new truck.

That's actually how I found TW, long before I had a T, I used this site's tire calc while doing AutoX stuffs.

I am guessing, but 2k - 4k to change gearing on a 2wd is quite steep.

I'm a very visual hands on kinda person and I like TW's old vs new size overlay and representative images, plus as it's a pure calculator you can enter non-existent tire sizes.

If only the weight loss from my wallet was proportional to the weight added to the truck.

Bingo. Unsprung weight is key. Spot on.

    OP:
Its most likely your wheel choice more than anything. Chances are, they are much heavier than OEM. Now if you got E rated tires, then that will play a huge roll too.

If it makes you feel any better, I get 16.7 highway with 265/70/17 BFg's and 17" T4R sema wheels. I have no added weight either. I think each one of my wheels and tires weight 73.5lbs
