It’s taken me a while to get to this but here’s an update. Called the dealer they told me they replaced the fluid in both the transfer case and the transmission said they didn’t know about the fluid type.

Decided to change both just to be safe. Transmission drained super clean but smelled strong like diff fluid. There was also a lot of fluid either spilled and not cleaned or leaking from fill plug. T-case looked slightly dark like maple syrup didn’t smell nearly as much. So thinking they didn’t change that. Really gives me a lot of confidence in the “professionals”

definitely seems like it’s shifting a lot smoother now that the fluid is correct.

Decided to send in a sample of the questionable oil in the transmission to Blackstone for testing will post the results once I get them. Hoping they will be able to tell me if its GL4 vs GL5 new to lab testing of oil so I'm not sure.

It's going to be 75w90 GL5. 100% Every dealer does this. GL5 is compatible and is not an issue. TW makes a big stink about this all the time.

Most tacomas have GL5 in the transfer case after a service. It doesn't hurt anything.

I can say I've never put GL4 in a transfer case in my career. Only now the new models actually specifically request LX or LT fluid.
