:facepalm:Oh jesh... only if you like to rock crawl and jump it. Otherwise, most weekenders don’t need that to drive on established BLM or Forest system roads, especially for a daily driver. Otherwise your truck is going to be like :ballchain: with all that extra daily dead weight in it. 5 matched good tires, a good jack, tow strap, shovel, compressor and tire plug kit are all that’s needed for most.

Carry tools with you. Even if it's just a basic all-in-one hand tools kit, it's better than nothing. Recovery gear. Air compressor. Don't be one of those people that comes to a trail run and brings nothing, then has to rely on others when something goes wrong. I'll always lend out my tools on the trail if they're needed but it's crazy how many people don't bring anything at all.

I always bring a spare CV axle and a couple old lower ball joints (they're weak on 1st gens so good to have spares). And a bunch of miscellaneous nuts and bolts. And of course a full size spare tire. Hi-Lift Jack. Shovel. Bailing wire and ratchet straps can be very useful for trail repairs just to get a truck back to the main road.

If you plan on doing harder trails then more spare parts is never a bad thing but can take up a lot of room.

All this stuff and my tool bag fits in a tote that I keep in the bed when going on a trail.

    ?

I mentioned system roads, not malls...
for malls you also need skids, armor and plate bumpers for ramming doors, etc. ;)

You should definitely go with these guys. I used to live in the Midwest and spent a ton of time at Badlands in my wrangler. There is PLENTY of open space sand dune to play around on and some nice, easy, well maintained trails to get you started on. I'm not sure if the tubes are still a thing but I would stay out of the tubes unless you get some sliders first. That drop can be a doozy.

I bobbed my tailpipe but it looks like in your photo that the hitch would hit first in that scenario. I have hit my tail pipe going over a rock, so learning about cutting it was a great idea. I also recently installed a skid plate on my hitch too- it works well for dropping down off steps at the mall!

You're unlikely to break anything (other than a tire) unless you slam on the gas to try and power through something - that excessive force is what breaks things most of the time.

Start with the speed bumps at the mall. Work your way up to street curbs, then pot holes. Before you know it, you’ll be off-roading with the best of them. The TRD Pro was not built to stay in your garage. Put some airtime on that bad boy.

I THINK YOU WILL BE FINE BRO!!!!! 20190704_114622.jpg

This pic here is my second 160+ offroad only "Overland....I know, I know...hehe" trip in 3 months. She is my DD!

Insurance will cover you as long as your on a designated road, I asked Geico on what ended up being a 3 hour phone call! I had to add $10k to my policy to cover all the "must have" goodies!:spending:

According to Geico, as long as your on a Road with a "designation" ie: Denton Trail, FR3007, FS214, a name......etc insurance HAS to cover you! Primitive roads with designations but you are over 100 miles off a FR, FS or back road..... is when it might get iffy.:lalala:

Some awesome advice on this thread! Like your hearing, know YOUR limits!

Know what YOU are capable of doing! Know the in's and out's of your truck. Dont just sit in her and grab the wheel...... DRIVE her, feel the tires through the pedal! haha

You get the point. If I were you and really wanted to do some first time offroading........Green trail, some version of max trax (traction mat), snatch rope (strap), 1 or 2 shackles and a MAP!!

This should get you anywhere you want to go there......and BACK!

Dont let the whole "Money" or "DD" thing stop you. Be smart bro! Do some prep! Post some pics of your first trip and

    HAVE FUN!!!!!

This seems relatively on topic here. I’m in Moab and debating between fins and things and the porcupine trail. I had been set on fins and things but am now having second thoughts. Anyone ran fins and things with a basically stock long bed crew cab? Just have 5100s up front to level and 265 75 16 falken wildpeaks.

I've never been, but check this out:

Dude does Fins 'n Things with a mostly stock 4Runner, no experience to speak of, and a trailer behind him. It goes fine. Granted, the taco is longer and the approach/departure angles are kind of garbage stock but as long as you take time to find your line, go slow, and don't mind dragging your hitch a little you should be ok I'd think.

    @Ariesgtturbo

I met a friend with his new pro at River Road Rally Park last weekend, first time wheeling my truck. My daughter and I had a blast! He was beating the snot out of his pro and giving me shit that my OffRoad wasn't dirty enough lol. Its an easy stock friendly park. I would say all that was needed is a friend and a tow strap to get out of deep mud.

I'm looking forward to going back to River Road and definitely looking forward to Badlands in the near future. Hit me up! DSC_0278.jpg
