Ditto!! Try a 93 Toyota Access Cab like the one I last owned. The small V6 used a quart of oil every 1500 miles, you had to lock the hubs manually, and use a manual shifter, and it was noisy on the highway and the wind made it whistle. Still it was my favorite vehicle ever and I put just under 200K miles on it. It is now a farm truck near McAlester, Oklahoma and still running. My new Tacoma is in a different class altogether. Seems like a luxury vehicle to me.

I'm going to disagree with some though.

The glove box dampening device is my favorite thing on the truck. When it breaks I will probably feel differently, but right now I sometimes open the box just to see it in action.

Mine sounds really cool, especially when the sub woofer kicks in.

I wonder if those with suspension problems have beat their trucks
to death on the rocks?? Tacomas are generally known for longevity and reliablilty.

Mud flaps.... the floor mats seemed awful... I was lucky and found one that didn't have floor mats as an option!

Its already been said, but I have to second the Tires. They are terrible! Put cheap rubber on cheap trucks. If I'm paying $28,000 for a truck, I want good rubbers on it!

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
The rear headrests in a Access Cab, it is more comfortable sitting back there without them, not to mention once they are removed you have so much better visibility out back. After those come the stereo, and the factory rear springs that sag around 400lbs.

I'm more of lurker here, don't post too much, but recently registered when I bought my 2012 DC 4x4 TRD Sport last week. This is my 3rd Toyota truck, my last being a 2005 DC SR5 that I traded in get this one. I'm not much of a modder myself, although I enjoy seeing what others have done with their Tacomas -- but I still find a lot of useful info here none the less (and often enjoy the discussion of other Tacoma enthusiasts).

One thing I will agree on quickly is the mud flaps. I lost 3 of them on my 2005 (2 front, 1 rear) by the time it hit 50K miles. I replaced the back ones, but just gave up on the fronts...completely worthless, but at least very easy to take care yourself. Still, I can't believe this is still a problem; the 2005 was the first model year for the 2nd gen, but I figured that by 2012 they would have improved the design...I guess not. Amen on the tires too, I'll keep these suckers for a bit, but will probably switch em out sooner rather than later.

I think if you are into modding and DIY, then getting a base model and doing your own work is both cheaper and more rewarding, plus in most cases leaves you with a better product. For folks like myself who simply don't have the time, resources or even desire to do this however, I feel the factory installed packages are pretty nice and come with some great features. I was leaning towards the off-road, but ended up getting a Sport because I couldn't find an OR in manual transmission anywhere near me. Do I need *everthing* that came with it? Nah (the ornamental hood scoop is a bit much), but I'm still quite happy with it...and the TRD Sport is definitely an upgrade over my former SR5...especially for someone like myself who won't be spending much time installing any custom mods.
