Damn, sorry to hear that. We have a 2012 RAV4 in pyrite mica and yes, super cool color. Reminiscent of the root beer brown days back when.

I have a similar age/mileage Tacoma; 2014 with 59 K. Started to just keep it garaged and drive a 2012 Civic as a DD. Good luck going forward my friend.

I find it hard to believe the insurance actually totaled it after hitting a deer unless after the deer he ran off the road and hit a tree.

It isn't so much the body damage as the airbag replacement that's really gonna make the cost jump

Sorry to hear this brother, especially because I have the same year, same color, low mileage truck. Glad you're OK.

Just hitting a deer shouldn't trigger the airbags. Would have to hit the deer and panic steer into something else. A few years ago I was in a Subaru that centered one at 70 mph with no airbag pops. It was towed to a body shop and repaired as good as new. No problem.

Don't accept the insurance offer without talking on the phone detailing exactly all the things you did that made your truck worth more, I got another grand on mine, isn't much but every dollar helps.

    dang it, that sucks.

I won't be surprised if insurance claims it totaled. My boss hit a mule deer buck just a couple years ago only going about 45 mph. Truck was totaled also, and his airbags also deployed, although his was a 2017.

Best of luck finding a replacement. I'd look for a gen 2, but low mileage are really hard to find.

I have done this and it worked out amazing -
I 'totaled' an E36 238is by spinning off the road and having a log take out the cat/converters underneath..
    With OEM replacements = totaled
I bought it back, did all the repairs with aftermarket cats [which failed a few yr later but since I don't have emissions inspection/whatever, I did not care] and put in a new clutch and a few other dodads..
Kept it for another 100K and had to sell it b/c the $$ it needed vs the $$ I had didn't work out at the time -
I wish I had kept it to this freaking day, best car EVER..
It never gave me shit, never broke, never fucked up - and I drove the shit out of her..

You should get an estimate to actually do the repair - all 8 bags and such - as long as there is no frame damage - -
Make sure you demand the estimate contain OEM parts - for the insurance purposes - but know what non/OEM costs too -
IDK how much wiggle room there is, but there often is - if you want to keep it forever, you can make these calculations for yourself..

Ask them how much to buy it back
Get all the #'s before you make a decision - cause this can/has/does work - though the air/bag situation may be too much, it is worth considering given the market..

Sorry to hear about it. I've told my deer hunting friends I've had to make more sudden slowdowns because of deer in the road or at the side of the road in the last six months than in my last 20 years of driving. One of them said the wolves are driving the deer south.

The other thing that plays into the total vs repair formula for the insurance company is the salvage value of the vehicle.

My kid's MazdaSpeed3 was damaged several years ago, and the thing that was pushing them to want to total is was the value of all the specific mazdaspeed parts made it a very lucrative car to sell for parts.

Point is, the formula they use is Cost to repair Vs Value of Car MINUS Salvage value of vehicle. If the salvage value is high, they may elect to pay you what it's worth and sell it to a rebuilder or used parts seller.

Yeah that's probably going to be the case. It's been over a week and the estimator hasn't looked at it yet .
