So I have been absent from here for a while because I have been trying to fight the schools judicial action. We were getting packed up for out road game this weekend when the school came back with the decision that our appeal has been denied and our rugby team has been suspended for a year.

We can't play our match this weekend or any others until Fall of 2010. Just want to remind people that the actions of 1 person can ruin something great for over 80 other people.

Everyone but those involved and team leaders have been kept in the dark about what happened. Basically during preseason (that is before the semester even started), a guy threw a small party. He arranged designated drivers and everything for it. He dropped a freshman off on campus and some how that kid got arrested on the way to his dorm.

I am unsure of all the details of this part, but from what we understand he panicked and told the officer that "A veteran made him drink" thinking it would get him out of trouble. The veteran in question is a member of the "C" team (A is like varsity, B is like JV etc. in terms of skill/league participation). He was not a team leader or anything.

Those 5 words got passed on to the school judicial review committee and their interpretation was:
"The team leader made it appear like drinking was a right of passage all new players must go through to be accepted on the team.

Bottom line is we got nailed for hazing. For the first time in almost a decade we had brought Virginia Tech rugby back from repeat winless seasons to national contenders. Last year we made it to midatlantic regionals and this year we are 10x better.

THey suspended the division III team (like the C side) which is the one the veteran was on, but they were allowing division I to continue playing until the appeal decision was made. That decision came this morning. Thats how we got to still travel to the university of delaware last weekend

That's horrible... it's a shame that this happened. Hope the word gets out to future players that what one does will affect everyone on the team.

So sorry your season was ruined :(

Well our coach told us the natural response is to victimize ourselves when we explain it to others, and that was the wrong reaction. He said we deserved it, but that was a few weeks ago before any of the details were released.

I fully believe if any hazing took place that those responsible should be held accountable. Disciplining the team responsible would also be understandable.

But after a few weeks of learning the details, fighting it and watching it unfold the way it did I do not think the entire program should be punished.

Ya the VT judicial system has the reputation of being more strict than the Nazi SS. Actually it is no longer called a "Judicial review (JR)" because the school thinks that sounds too judgmental and negative. It is now called a CR "conduct review"
