Worst Navigation ever

you act like you've never pulled over and unfolded a map. I would say thats worse than any electronic navigation

I don’t use the GPS very often but the few times I have it has definitely taken me some strange back woods routes. Luckily they have been pretty scenic. Haven’t used it much in the city. I feel like my phone GPS sucks as well.

 

Is there an app for that?

 

Mid 2000s I was on a patrol in the area of Kandahar. I asked the Platoon Sergeant where we were. He happily gave me a grid from his PLGR/PSN-11. Showed him my map and asked him to point to where we were within 50 meters. Fail. Map and compass do not rely on batteries, electricity, or space based GPS. Reliance on technology can kill, or send you 50 miles off course.

 

Where is that setting?

 

Epic fail

 

I use a Rand McNally Road atlas. Its a manual GPS. It may not get me to within 3 meters of my destination, but it always gets me close enough.

Never need to worry about batteries, or recalculations or database errors........

Its been very reliable.

 

Except when it's dark

 

Dome lights.

 

I've been impressed with Gaia so far. The only thing is you'll need to remember to scout your area ahead of time on the app or else it won't work without signal. But very seamless to do. Just look at the area and it remembers it

Require batteries

 

Geesh......if you are driving the engine is running......you have lights.

Ya gotta make it complicated.

 

I've used Garmin's top of the line for umpteen years, finding specific addresses all day long at work, long trips, etc. without issue. I will say this.. Get the best one you can, use a large screen device.. easier to just glance at it. I make sure to keep software and maps up to date. I Learn everything about my device that I possibly can.. everything. I mostly use voice control because it's easy.
If you use it in a given area every day, you'll never "learn" the area, so you'll need a backup.. If it blinks out someday, instant lost.

I know two truck drivers who got stopped and ticketed for using their phone for navigation. One lost his job over it, or so he says. No prob for me, too small for me to use effectively, plus out in the boonies, I don't always have cell phone service.
