Never had any instance of changing filter where this didn't work. It also doesn't require destroying the filter to get it off either..........unless it's been on there for 10 yrs, but that's a different problem.

I’ve done it once or twice successfully with a screwdriver. Also a handful of times unsuccessfully.

Behold, the magic tool. Plenty of room to position it up in there to break filter free..............

Toyota sells a part the slips over the top of the oem filter, and attached to a socket wrench. Super simple and easy.

You can get those from everywhere. I have a set and maybe used them twice. Unless you are talking about the socket for Toyota canister filters.

Either of these should work well. Grab onto the part of the filter closest to the ground to break it loose. Shouldn't need to get up in between the metal plate near the top of the filter. I've always wondered why that was even there.

Whenever you have success and get ready to put the new one on, lube up the o-ring on the filter with some fresh oil, and put it on hand tight. Should solve this problem at your next change

Those are available most places too. I have one for the wife's RAV4. Got it from auto parts store.

I have a 4.0 as well, so I understand the appeal, but these little 2.7s are indestructible if you take good care of them

Back in 2003 or so I took our 1995 Civic into a Jiffy Lube to get my AC recharged (they were running a special), pulled in and the guys started checking out the car (I drove right over the pit and never had to get out of the car), I figured they were just checking on leaks and stuff. Couple minutes later they tell me to go inside and pay while they put in the oil. I asked, "what oil? I'm here for AC service. And I just did an oil change 500 with full synthetic (car had about 250k miles on it at that point)."

Went inside to talk with the manager about it. They wanted to charge me for the oil change. Finally had to call his manager. They gave me a refund so I could get new synthetic oil, a new filter (they never changed mine, I always write the miles and date installed on them before installing) and a free AC service. Ended up having a leak and they fixed it for free.

It's hard to get a regular filter wrench up in there, I use one of the cap type filter wrenches with a stubby ratchet and that fits.
I had a really stubborn one once so I just took a c-clamp and tightened it down hard on the filter and used that as a handle, the old filter is junk anyway so it doesnt matter if you damage it

So time for a little update. I went and bought the fram filter wrench as suggested. The handle was still too big to fit up there so it was time to try a different angle. I ripped the tire off and went through the side. There was enough room for the wrench to attach and....... well it was on so tight it bend the handle on the wrench in half. Time to try a different one :bananadead:

Most oil filters I can unscrew by hand unless He-man of he universe was screwing it on then pliers are needed. D
